Which tank is it so we know what equipment it already comes with. Example, some come with a return pump already.

The basics to get started are:
Lighting
RODI system if you plan to make your own water
Some kind of circulation pump/wave maker
Heater, probably like a 200 watt with Inkbird Controller (this is a non-negotiable in my book)
Auto Top of System unless you're ok manually topping off.

These are my go to basics usually.

+1 on the inkbird.
  • I would also reccomend a mesh lid for the top as well so you dont get any jumpers.
  • I have a second heater as well for warming up my water change water. Or in case main display heater fails.
  • Also make sure to have a reliable tester for salinity, alkalinity, nitrates, and phosphates (hannah is what i use)

Is this just fish?
Fish can have basic lights, and if you start with live rock in the tank then you can skip most of the test kits, although a nitrate test is useful to keep abreast of water changes.
And having a good glass scraper is also going to be important.
