I am in the process setting up a 220gal reef tank. My tank has corner overflows with 4 total holes (2 in each corner). I assume this is set up for a Herbie type system with 2 return lines? Any recommendations on plumbing would be appreciated. Should I stick to Herbie? Could I get away with a bean animal system and only a 1 sided return? I do not won’t to drill any additional holes.
Thanks for the help!!!

Is the tank an Aqueon? I have 120 it has durso returns it works great. Check with a LFS they are readily available or diy your own. Keep it simple!

Welcome to the reef. Glad you joined.

I have a 180 Marineland , probably similar to yours with dual overflows. I ran the durso for a long time. Very reliable but could never fully silence the gurgle. I just redid mine going with herbie. Super quite. I am not sure if the 1 return would allow enough flow to turn over the tank enoug times as bean. Maybe someone running bean with 1 return can help

Bean animal and Herbie drains will flow the same amount of water as long as the plumbing is the same size. Your plumbing size is the deciding factor on how much flow you will get out of your drain as both methods employ a main full siphon drain. You certainly won't get as much turnover with one return as you would with two but this is all dependant once again on plumbing sizes and whether your drain can handle dual returns or not in the first place...

A Herbie or Modified Bean are both excellent options to work with on a tank like this. Obviously the added redundancy of the Bean is a nice comfort but having Dual returns with a Herbie adds better flow dynamics to the tank. Really you can't go wrong with either method and it all comes down to your goals for flow.
