posting this thread to get your input on POTM topics you would like to see.
please share your favorite topics for POTM keeping in mind the following aspects:
- Subject has to be in tank and not in the ocean or public aquariums
- Subject has to be widely available so that it doesn't limit number of submissions
Looking forward to great ideas we can use for POTM topics in coming months

I thought maybe doing one that has a topic which the namer of a coral fits into that category it could be from a vendor or possibly a made up name just have to note it. For instance: This months topic is corals that have a famous persons name/group (Bill murray, Dan Akroyd, pink floyd) or something from a movie: Optimus, Prime, Pikachu, Avatar chalice, etc. Could also do foods, candies etc

Here are a few ideas that I haven't seen in a while.

- Coral Species Dominant Tanks "Full Tank Shots" (ie LPS dominant, Mushroom Dominant, Zoa Garden Tanks, , SPS, etc)
- Star Fish (LOL. I have a photo I've been hoping to post one day)
- Fish Pairs

I have a subject I think is really underrated and overlooked

Lets gets some pictures of inverts in actions, Snails on glass, blue legs crawling, urchins with things stuck all over their back, shrimp and crabs picking at rocks.

I'm sure there are plenty of interesting/different/new topics we could think up, but imo I think the less specific the topic, the better. I prefer potm when there are tons of entries, more contestants and more photos to see. Think of something everyone has or at least most of us. I don't like the limiting topics like specific fish/coral species.
Instead how about....
one fish
two fish
red fish
blue fish
yellow coral
purple inverts
any color of the rainbow any coral/inverts/fish
....you get the idea.
The topic doesn't have to be interesting to get super awesome entries!

A few topics that quickly come to mind:

- Macro-algae
- Sump / Filter
- Top down view
- Dinner time! (feeding / eating shots)
- Prettiest pest
- Aquarium Photobomb
- Reef Equipment (artistic shot of any piece of reefing gear - i.e., skimmer, pump, light reactor, etc.)
- Water (best artistic shot that captures the stuff our livestock live in - i.e., drips, flow, bubbles, etc.).
- Eye / fin / single polyp only

I would like to see multiple POTM for different types of tanks. There could be a different theme POTM for SPS every month along with one for LPS, Softies, etc.

I know it is more threads to have but this is the photography forum after all.

I just feel a lot are left out if they don't have anything to offer everytime there is a POTM. I have a SPS dominate tank so I can only post a picture when it relates to me which isnt often. If there was a SPS POTM every month then I could give it a try every month instead of once or twice a year.

Could post the thread to vote in the forum topic it is related to. For the monthly SPS POTM it could be a sticky thread in the SPS discussion forum so everyone in the SPS forum can see it and vote on it.

I think there would be a lot more participation and turn out if it was done this way. It would still be "exclusive" as you are only looking at 12 winners a year for each category.

And as far as the prize. I honestly don't care to win a prize. I love taking pictures of my pieces when they look good and would be honored to win. That to me matters more than a prize.

Idea 1 Mirror images. Getting a reflection in the same frame.
Idea 2 Black Gold. Let’s see some skimmate pics.

How about the dark side of the reef? Surely there's gotta be some wild pest photos. Not so much algae etc, but verms, aips, worms etc. Maybe CUC/invert? Feeding fish/corals would be cool too

On the hunt
- fish and inverts searching for food naturally, not just feeding time

Specific colors for fish, invert and coral

Habitat picture
-show off a picture from your tank that looks like it could be straight out of the ocean

Macro algaes

Predatory fish

Most colorful coral in your tank

Rock only
- show us the growth on your live rock as beautifully as possible

Symbiotic relationships
-shows us a picture of what animals in your tank have mutually beneficial relationships

Odd/funny shots
