Prazipro dose recommendation for DT

I’ve seen two recommendations. One is full dose (5mL or 1 tsp per 20 g) for the estimated net system volume. The other being 80% of the full dose (4 mL per 20 g). I dosed at 80% about 2h ago and could supplement if necessary.

Please let me know which is the correct dose?

I dose the full 5ml per 20g and have no issues. I have a softy tank I treat all my new fish in before they got to my main display. Prazipro has been dosed in this tank almost monthly for a year and no issues

To be safe , dose at 80% of recommended and apply initial dosage known as an interval for 8 days, do a water change and do one more 8 day dose interval
Use airstone with prazi as it does reduce both oxygen and appetite. If running a skimmer, leave cup off first 24 hrs as skimmer will go nuts from the glycol solution in Prazi. I recommend 4ml per 25 gals

The full dose for the NET system volume of the tank is what you want. The 80 or 85% amount is an attempt to figure in rock and sand displacement, which usually runs about 15% of the total tank volume.

The problem with Prazipro is the solvent, a glycol. This material is broken down by bacteria just like with carbon dosing. You need to run a good air stone to offset the oxygen uptake by the heterotrophic bacteria.

It could be that the teaspoon we spoon food with is 5 mL, but I’m sure the volume of those vary.

Yes - teaspoon measurements are not very accurate (due to the meniscus). A pipette is more accurate.

You can start collecting skimmate and add carbon back on 24 hours after the dose, the prazi is mostly broken down by then anyway.

The biggest issue with praziquantel treatments is being able to break the life cycle of egg laying flukes. Prazi doesn't actually kill flukes, it just stuns them so that they fall off. Once an adult fluke has come off a fish it cannot go back and it dies. Fluke eggs are not harmed by prazi. The trick is to dose it 2 or 3 times at an interval that times things so the flukes hatch from eggs, attach to a fish and then are knocked off and killed before they have time to lay new eggs of their own. Because the egg hatching time is variable, it can be difficult to do this. I use an interval of 7 to 9 days, but that is just a "best guess".

That's a tough call. I typically use 3 to 5 doses for an active Neobenedenia infection, but only two doses if the fish undergoing quarantine are asymptomatic.

I saw the first reappearance of scratching and head shaking today, 5 days after first Prazipro treatment. I was going to wait another couple days for the second treatment but I guess it’s time for the second? I did a 25% WC yesterday.

Yes - the timing on this is all just a guess, so if the symptoms returned, I’d hit them again.

Are you saying you dose it into you DT? I’ve noticed possible fluke in my DT flashing etc. I have a heavy LPs tank just want to make sure it’s safe to. My concern even if i set up a QT i will still have the fluke worms in sand etc. Thanks for the help
