As some of you know I have several high school students who are attempting some interesting zoanthid research projects starting this spring
people have been kind in offering frags from around the country which is a great thing but I have a question. (This applys to donor and store bought alike)

I normally drip acclimate corals and fish and have had pretty good success with this but I was wondering how you (specialists) handle adding new pieces to your tank

I read about the dips and will certainly use the iodine dip, I am a little worried about the hot water method though.

any other treatments or suggestions here??

thanks for your help

I acclimate by floating the bag in the sump and adding 1 cup water every 15-20min for 2 hours.

All zoas get a 7-10min FW dip w/TMPCC. The FW dip water is brought to tank temp and the pH is matched to the tank water as well. Then the zoas go into QT for 4 weeks.

If the zoas has infection from shipping or from prev owners tank, i've been doing 2 dips a week in Furan-2. 1 cup RO water, temp and pH matched, with 1 packet Furan-2 for 20min.

I float them in the bag in my tank for about 15 minutes and then I do a quick 5 minute dip and place them in the sandbed until they open and then a few days later I'll figure out where to glue them :)

Wow i go thru a lot more than everyone else so far. I guess when you've been thru the problems with zoas that i have, you get extra careful.

yeah i don't think zoanthids are so picky in terms of acclimation. i usually throw them in after half an hour drip acclimation, but i've heard of people just throwing them right in and frags just doing fine.

Thanks guys, I think I will have the kids use the iodine and freshwater dip but shy away from the hot water unless it appears to be big trouble. In which case it will go to the hospital tank for a few weeks before being allowed to head to the lab tanks for experiments.

Before the projects I have had a dozen or so frags of zoanthids and palys. From what I have read I got pretty lucky in not having any of the trouble pests

I will heed the advice and dip and inspect with a great deal of care.

Thanks again
