I don't have experience with Nanos, but here is my guess.

Pros: surface skimming (it helps keeps the nasty film down that can accumulate on top of your water), waste removal, aeration, and less need for water changes.

Cons: All of this can be done with a properly positioned powerhead and regular water changes (1-2 gallon water changes a week depending on bioload).

Million dollar answer. I ran a 5g on my desk for two years with a hob Aqua. Clear and $14 hob fuge. The fuge was powered by an air pump.

Lol. Sorry. A five gallon tank with an aquaclear filter. A hang on back refugium with chato. Ato top off and heater. A small compact fluorescent and an LED strip.
All the basics. A skimmer is one method of nutrient reduction. So is mechanical filtration the aquaclear and the chato removes the exess nutrients.
Temp and salinity are the biggest challenge.
I did a DIY fan with temp sensor for the main cooling.

The key is not over feeding but feed well so the fish is healthy.

On what a skimmer for a nano? What size ? And fwiw I hated every little skimmer I ever tried.
And trust me I screwed up a lot of stuff too.
Just don't get confused by the rabbit beans about what you need. If I had everything everyone told Me I need ed I wouldn't be able to afford food for the kids.

Skimmers are pretty much about nutrient export. In a nano, it is just easier to not mess with dosing, nutrients and skimming and just use brute force water changes. A 2 gallon water change is 40 percent.

Sorry for ditching the thread yesterday. I have an early bedtime :) To answer your question, no I would not put a skimmer on a six gallon nano. There are so many other things you can spend your money on that to me it's honestly a waste.

You want crystal clear water? I'd go @saltyfilmfolks' path and get yourself an aquaclear HOB filter. It has a removable media basket that makes cleanup fairly simple and works well in this application. Running filter floss, keeping a low bioload, sticking to a good feeding schedule, and doing regular water changes should keep your water nice and clean.

Ive actually never been a crystal clear water guy myself. I figure coral are filter feeders so why worry. But from what ive always seen mechanical filtration is the best for that, but filters get clogged so you have to change them.
an aqua clear a canister and a reactor are all actually the same thing, a mech filter assuming its floss only, put carbon gfo etc its a chem filter. add media it a bio filter.
so for me its more where is the tank how do you want it to look(the whole thing) and what can you put in it to grow what you want to grow, how you want to grow it. A certain amount of reality needs to be checked there because some folks do expect a bit much out of a 5 or 10 gal.. but it def can be done.

my 5g had a small hood canopy i built and hid all working parts btw. the ato container was on the floor under the desk.

if youd like some more input on the nano skimmers and how well some work you may want to start a new thread looking for suggestions on nano skimmers. Ive always been curios about t couple of them
