I have been battling a wicked unknown algae for some time now and recently read a post about diy dino test. I don't remember where or who it was but basically, suck some of the algae up and mix vigorously until it is all broken up. Pour algae sample (in tank water) through filter sock/ paper towel/ some sort of filter media into a clean cup. Place under light and wait. If new algae growth forms in clear water test sample it is more than likely the dreaded reef herpes.. I mean dinoflagellates haha. Now I begin an uphill battle against them with slowly rising ph and adjusting light schedule.

This post is just a friendly PSA verifying the test does work and is quite easy to do at home without any special kits or chemicals.
