ok guys my brother gave me a big piece of monti cap , it was from the bottom so it was not that colorful, it has starting coloring up but has this brownish looking coating on part of it, its in medium flow maybe 6" off the bottom, under LEDs. Any clue what this is or how to get rid of it, sorry for the bad pic.

Possibly cyano, dinos, or diatoms. Any chance of a picture? Is it stringy? Does it come off if you blow water on it with a powerhead or turkey baster?

Can you blow it off? Any other algae issues in the tank? How mature is the tank?

If it were my piece, I would cut off the purple healthy tissue, and ditch the rest. Monti's grow so FAST that you won't hardly miss the center section at all after about 2 months.

I havnt tried to blow it off yet, ill try that when i get home from work , the tank is a little over 3 years old , had corals in it almost 2, no algae issues in the tank, its a large piece, maybe 7-8 inches wide and maybe 5-6 deep, i could cut off the bad stuff, but just wondering if it is salvagable.

This happens on areas where the Monti died from the shade. The living part will probably plate back up and over grow it. I always just ignore it, in a few weeks/months you won't be able to tell anyhow. The best thing is to just remove the healthy part and reattach.
