PVC wall mount with unions

Redoing my fish room and will need to run some 1" pvc across a wall. I want to secure to the wall and have previously used clamps like these:

Like everyone else complains about, they mount the pipe too close to the wall if there are any unions in the run. Has anyone found a better solution than just putting a 3/4" piece of wood between the wall and the clamp? Are there any better clamps that stand off a little more?

It may not be a lot different than a piece of wood, but a block (or strip) of PVC might also work. You could even glue it to the clamp before you mount it. Good luck with whatever you choose!
