Hey everyone! So I went by the fish store today to pick up some food and they just so happened to have a show size of a tang Ive been wanting. I got tang and I luckily had a 20 gallon tall qt set up from another fish. But I’m a little concerned about this fish being too cramped in a 20 tall. I have a 65 gallon I can set up if absolutely necessary. The tang is a Naso lipstick tang about 6-8 inches long. He will be in qt for about 30 days, so I feel like the 65 would be more ideal for this fish. I know they are very active swimmers. Please advise! Thanks in advance!!

With a well established biological filter, and assuming the specimen is eating well, the 20 should be fine for a month. Especially if you are treating prophylactically, you will save $ on medication.

Thank you very much for your advice! I’ve had this qt setup for about 2 months so I think the biological filter is established.

Yes, should be fine. Make sure to aerate well if you have to medicate. I use a (aggressive) ten day prophylactic QT protocol, that treats Uronema, Brook, Ich, flukes, and internal parasites. I use a 40 gal, but would not think twice about using a smaller tank.

Thanks! May I ask what you use for uronema and is it necessary to treat for that if it’s not present? I had a new fish die from that a few weeks back, but it had it when I bought it. (I was told it was a bruise)

No, you don't have to test for Uronema if it's not present, however, without a microscope and tissue sample, it can be impossible to tell.

For Uronema i treat prophylactically with Metronidazole - in the form of Metroplex. The problem in general with not treating prophylactically, is that many fish carry diseases, but never present. In these instances, a seemingly healthy fish can cause diseases in others that affect them greatly, or kill them.

I also add metroplex to the food, which treats for internal parasites. Uronema usually presents in Anthias and Chromis.

Thanks for the info!

The 20g should be fine for the tang if it’s just a month long qt and it’s the only fish in there.
