I am new to the world of corals and I am going to ask a silly question pleas forgive my ignorance. why are torches LPS's? they have long tentacles and do not seem to have a rigid body why are they not softies?

LPS stands for Large Polyp Stony corals...
Torches have long tentacles, (or polyps). and are made up of calcium carbonate bodies... If you see one retracted, you will see its stony body.

Yes they can give the appearance of free form body like an anemone. Especially if you only see a single polyp frag. One polyp consists of a single mouth area and dozens of long tentacles and sting prey or nearby corals.
Like other branching euphyllia. They multiply, by branching and can look like a small tree when all the polyps are retracted.
