I bought one thinking it would spread out and encrust onto my rock like a mat...

For that, you'll need something from the "polyp" group, like zoas, palys, gsp... SPS and LPS corals build a skeleton.

Encrusting implies calcification. There are several types of encrusting LPS and SPS. Cyphastria is an example of an encrusting LPS , montipora is an SPS that encrusts. I believe Palys and Zoas are related to anenomes They spread but do not lay down a calciferous base.

I like the Cyphastria but my lfs rarely gets them and when he does they get sold fast

Shipping is what beats me. I mostly like to go to lfs or people near me

Don't be afraid to have coral shipped. I do it all the time with great success. And if there is an issue, a good seller will replace or refund.

M. lordhowensis (assuming that's the species you're talking about) will spread out over a rock in time, they aren't the fastest growing though. They do lay down a calcareous skeleton and is quite different from a Zoanthid in the way it grows. So yes, it will grow over what you have it on, but not as an actual mat.
