Adding my two cents

20200524 Tank PAR - 100% T5_LED.png

Type of meter you are using for measurements: Seneye Reef
Type of lighting.. be specific as possible and include things like manufacturer, age, length and type of bulbs for those t5 users, wattage and reflectors for the MH users.: Aquatic Life 48" DX18 - controlled by Apex for light regimen - 100% Inner / 100% Outer at the time of the photo and PAR readings - 4 54W ATI bulbs - Blue Plus / Actinic paired as "Inner" and Coral Plus / Purple Plus paired as "Outer" - all four bulbs approaching two months installed.
LED users if possible include percentages used for different colors: Current USA LED (not sure which model) with RGB LEDs at 100% and White at 90%. This is about two and a half years old.
Height of lighting over your water: 12"
Depth of water: 21"
Pumps or power heads running?: Running
Any other factors that may contribute to readings such as room lighting, windows, tank in sunroom? etc.: Ambient light coming from the "wall of window" but the sun was on the opposite side of the house and there was not a significant amount of direct light into the room. I am working on a custom canopy (I work slow :) ) and there are currently no sides and some light leaks into the room.
A picture with measurements would be ideal but a list/description would be fine as well. See picture
Provide as many collection points as possible such as bottom of tank left, right and center.. middle of tank left, right, center, front and back etc. See mark up of the readings

I recently purchased my T5/LED hybrid fixture to accommodate my perceived need for improved lighting. I was pleasantly surprised to see the results. I may actually have to tone down my lighting a little bit as I plan on running a softy/LPS mixed tank and a lot of my research is low to moderate lighting. Based on what I am seeing I have mostly high lighting PAR in the tank. Although I have to admit my Rhodactis on the right is fully loving that spot with 213 PAR.

I setup a small display tank in home office. I plan to make it SPS dominate.

Being as this is my first time using LEDs I borrowed a PAR meter from my LFS. In the past I would simply place the corals anywhere I wanted in the display as I was running more than enough lighting with MH and T5. I was unsure if these two fixtures would provide enough PAR so that is why I tested. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have bothered. In all the years I’ve been reefing I never checked for PAR. I simply looked for signs from the corals concerning placement.

Based on my results, I’m glad I didn’t grab a third XR15.I like a very white look to my display so I am very happy with the current settings. With the PAR tested I should have no issues placing SPS just about anywhere in the display.

Here are my readings. Measured with the seneye on my 75g mixed reef. Tank has two kessil a360x. With the below settings and running the lunar mode (pardon the handwriting)
The picture I used below was a recent FTS I had which looks darker but the par readings noted correspond to the 4:30pm setting. Full daylight.

7:00am Clr=0, Int=1, Vi=0 R=0, G=0

11:00am Clr=10, Int=30, Vi=10 R=5, G=5

2:00pm Clr=30, Int=70, Vi=70 R=15, G=15

4:30pm Clr=60, Int=85, Vi=85 R=20, G=20

7:00pm Clr=30, Int=70, Vi=70 R=15, G=15

9:00pm Clr=0, Int=10, Vi=5 R=0, G=0

10:00pm Clr=0, Int=1, Vi=0 R=0, G=0

12:00pm Clr=0, Int=0, Vi=0 R=0, G=0

This is a great thread!

I’m renting a par meter this week and will get measurements for my new gen 5 blues on my 36x18x21 tank.

I think I’ll do a few variations to provide as much info as possible

RedSea Reefer 250
Length 35.5"
Height 21"
Width 20"

Two Radion XR15 Gen 4
8.5" Off The Water - NOT Off the top of the rim on the tank
Par Tested with Apogee MQ-510

Flow Left On
Two MP10qWD on Back Wall
Neptune COR20 at 45%

Since flow was on I left the meter in the same location for a few seconds. I let the numbers jump around and picked the most consecutive reading.

AB+ 85% Intensity.jpeg

AB+ 100% Intensity.jpeg

GR5% 68% Intensity.jpeg

GR5% 85% Intensity.jpeg

GR5% 100% Intensity.jpeg
Adding to this wonderful resource. I rented a PAR meter and took some measurements in the tank
  • Type of meter you are using for measurements- MQ-510
  • Type of lighting- Radion XR30 Pro gen4 with diffuser
  • LED users if possible include percentages used for different colors- Screenshot of settings added.
  • Height of lighting over your water- Using the RMS arm. Sits about 8.5 inches above the water level
  • Depth of water- 18 inches
  • Pumps or power heads running? Return Pump and powerheads running
The tank is a reefer 250- 36x20x21 The question. Can an single XR30 Pro light a reefer 250?

I mapped out 6 inch by 6 inch sections of the tank and held the meter in a few spots in each section then took a general average of the PAR readings in the area (This was an eyeball estimate and not an calculated mean).

First settings is pretty close to AB+ with a bit less warm white at 40% intensity. The grids will be 6"x 6" sections looking from the top down of the tank. (na indicates a rockwork was in the way)

Since I want to start to add some SPS these numbers were not exactly where I wanted them to be so I settled at about 68% intensity. Those numbers look like this

Here is a shot of the tank with some more sample numbers with the 68% intensity settings above. So can a single XR30 pro gen 4 light a reefer 250. I would say yes with some conditions. Lower outer ends will get pretty low in par but still plenty for softies etc.

I have the meter for another day or two so if anyone has any requests let me know and I will take some more readings.

I have the same tank and am using two Gen 5 XR 15 Blue. What I would like to know from all of you and perhaps the instruction on the OP can be adjusted as well is what's the distance from one light to another? I think everyone needs to put this information on as well.

Hi!

My lights are about 10" from each side of the display tank. However, the light on the right side is 3-4" more towards the back of the tank than the light on the left. The great thing about these RMS mounts is I can slide the lights front to back so that I am not wasting light on the sandbed and that the corals are properly lit.

6ft 125 gallon

48" Reef Breeders Photon V2 (left)
24" Photon V2 + (right)

~11" above the water
MP40's and return pump on normal schedule

BRS rented MQ-510 (averages)

I all readings in the pictures with the tank were taken at "peak" or highest intensities. The spreadsheet shows during the 1600 hr (ramp down). I have also included the schedule for anyone interested.
Been running this schedule and the ones posted above for about two weeks. Corals have responded well to the drop in intensity. (the small number that are in the tank)

those par readings at 65 % are super strong basicalllly stricky sps. i was seriously considering 2 15's on a 36 gallon bowfront and i wouldnt mind sopme sps but mostly lps and softies. Might better rethink this. I would;d be paying for par i dont need but I do plan to move them to a 90 or 120 gallon soon and buy one more!

I had the chance to rent a PAR meter today (Thanks, Donny and crew at Wet Pets in Vernon, CT). This message is a bit long, but with lots of photos documenting the various settings and lighting heights I examined. Enjoy!
  • Type of meter you are using for measurements: Biotek Marine BTM3000 (manufactured by Apogee, looks to be the same as the Apogee SQ-420)
  • Type of lighting: 2 AI Hydra HD, new in June 2019
  • LED users if possible include percentages used for different colors: see below. I measured PAR for several different spectra
  • Height of lighting over your water: see below. I measured PAR at 3 heights.
  • Depth of water: 21" max. Tank is a Waterbox 130.4, 48L x 24"W x 22H
  • Pumps or power heads running? no
  • Any other factors that may contribute to readings such as room lighting, windows, tank in sunroom? etc.
First picture is of the tank (on whites & blues for photo) with water depths (in ") at which measurements were taken.
PAR depths.jpeg

Next, I measured PAR with all channels at 100% (UV, violet, royal blue, blue, green, deep red, & white). Three heights of lights above water level: 12", 8" & 6". ABL on figures is above water level.

all on 100 12in.jpeg

all on 100 8in.jpeg

all on 100 6in.jpeg

Next I adjusted the lighting to what I think is the highest-intensity setting during my daily program:
100 115 100 60 6 20 20.jpg

With PAR measurements for this setting at 12", 8" and 6":

uv100 v115 r100 b60 w20 12in.jpeg

uv100 v115 r100 b60 w20 8in.jpeg

uv100 v115 r100 b60 w20 6in.jpeg

Next I adjusted the lighting to heavily-blues setting I run as part of my program:
110 115 100 60 5 35 1.jpg

And measured PAR again at 12", 8" and 6":

uv110 v115 r100 b60 12in.jpeg

uv110 v115 r100 b60 8in.jpeg

uv110 v118 r140 b80 6in.jpeg

Lastly I tested one final lighting setting, maxxing out the blues as much as I could:
110 118 140 80 5 50 10.jpg

And measured PAR, but only at 6" depth:
uv110 v118 r140 b80 6in.jpeg

I'm still digesting what this all means. At first cut, the PAR across the board was not as high as I was expecting. I don't like to run with much whites, so these data might make me rethink that.
Are you usingthe hydra 32 or 64 and how high are they mounted! I really wish they based the 32 like they do the 64! ^4 just looks to big and overwhelming. But only 600.00 and the 32 are 400 and some change. I need the 32 but for that I may as well go radion because the 14's are only 50 more but the 30's are over 200 more!

  • Meter: MQ-510 Full Spectrum Underwater LED PAR Meter (rented from BRS)
  • Tank: Red Sea Reefer 525 XL
  • Lighting Type: 2x Orphek Atlantik v4s
  • Mounting Height: 15" from water
  • Water Depth: 22"
  • Pumps and Powerhead Off
  • Misc: Tank is set up in the corner of a room. Two small skylights provide some light from the top, and a large door wall provides additional light to the right of the tank. Neither of these sources provided direct sunlight during measurements, though.
Readings were taken with two settings. First was setting 100% on all channels. Second was setting to the "Coral Color + Growth" setting and measuring at the peak.

Excellent lights! I ended up turning them down quite a bit, but gives me the flexibility to have a sweet SPS side and a sweet LPS side by setting the power differently on each unit.

@Orphek @James Emory
Does orphek sell those mounts for those lights or did you rig up some others to work? They look awesome. I wonder if they would work on another brands like reefbreeders or ocean revive. Cant afford those lights if I ever want to buy more coral...lol

Anyone have par on a noopschye and pics of tank? Love to see them. Help me decide between, ocean revive and noop, maybe reef breeders even considering radion 15" and hydra. I would go for hydra , BUT the 2 puck 32'2 are 50 bucks less than radion 15's But when you jump up higher the 64 hydra are 600 where the radion 30 is 800 so radion is 200 more when you go up in size. Thats whats stopping me! I dont want the bigger ones since I am startying them in a small tank, but plan on upgrading toa 12- in less than a year. I also dont like the fac tthat hydra's are supposed too be mounted so high. I have been basing my shopping on youtubes basically. None of the lfs around me have anything but hydra and kessil, and the radions are older and way up high on a frag tank. Noopschye looks real nice on you tubes. The colors and all but looks blurry inmost tanks for some reason. I almost ordered them today! Wish I could ordered one of each and try them the send back what I dont want...lol

Any chance you can get readings with only one xr15 on? I have one over a 20x20 cube but even on max point and schedule intensity on ab+ im getting maybe 350-400 par at surface, 9” under the light and 7 inches under that im getting 160/170 on my rockwork so im not sure if im setting it up wrong or its just one xr15 isnt that strong
