My girlfriend has taken a great interest in my 36 gallon saltwater tank and my 15 gallon Fluval flex on my night stand. She wants to put a saltwater nano tank on her night stand around 5-10 gallons. She just wants to put a pair of clownfish in it with some rock and corals. I just cant seem to find a good all around tank and I am not sure the best way to set up a nano tank since it all needs to fit on her night stand. Any suggestions on a good tank in that size?

What is the size of the top of the nightstand?

Something else to consider, the more water volume she can have the better. The smaller the tank the more sensitive it will be, and for a first tank just something to keep in mind. Totally do-able, just make sure she understands small changes can have bigger effects the smaller the tank.

I've been doing research on adding a smaller tank myself recently, so I have a few opinions I can share once we know what size she can fit and what price point she's looking at. :)

I really like the nuvo tanks.

they come with a media basket, which is something I have not seen any companies include yet.

they also come with some very nice and strong pumps, which on a 10 gallon, 300 gph is strong enough for LPS such as Euphyllia and torch. I would say maybe even some sos, but have never had any experience with them.

they also come with a mesh lid that in my experience, have never slipped into my tank and is made very well.

I really also like water box tanks, however they’ve become very pricey, have weak pumps on nano, and don’t come with a media basket, so you would be looking to purchase a new pump and maybe even a media basket (yes they make changing out media bags and filter floss so much easier.

only advantage I see is that water box makes more ‘square’ and aesthetically looking tanks, where nuvo makes more of a rectanglular ‘good looking tank as well.

I would go with nuvo any day, I love them

An ATO is definitely recommended. ATO’s for these nano tanks have to be small on sensors. From what I hear Túnez has a great ATO, but I personally would look for an ATO that has good customer service.

I top off my tank manually, but I would go with companies such as reef breeders that have excellent customer support

I've been using the Tunze Nano ATO for about 8yrs now, I've not had any issues. Even sat in a box for about 3yrs at one point and worked perfect hooking it back up lol

Hang on back filter and skimmer.
Heater. powerhead.

I forget the measurements off the top of my head, but I know from the few i have seen that she will only be able to fit a 5-10 cube on her nightstand and still have the amount of room she wants.

I am interested in this one, but when doing my research on it I am seeing very mixed reviews. Some love it and then others say they had to do upgrades from the get go.

I think the upgrades are only needed when people try to push them to do more. In my case I needed to upgrade a few options because I am running 40+ corals in a 20g tank and several are Acropora variations. So I added a Fuge, 2nd media tower, UV sterilizer, skimmer and MP10W for flow, ATO, pH monitor, etc etc. If I were to try and do this with JUST what the tank offered, it would end poorly.

I believe A LOT of those reviews are from people who are simply new and just don't understand the tank is just the first piece you need, depending on what you want to keep you very very likely will need additional equipment or upgrades. The first piece may be the tank, but your first step should be planning what you want to house.

Does she know what she wants to keep in it? Fish? Coral? Inverts? Anything specific? From that you can determine tank size needed for them, then lighting to keep them, then flow if needed. Start working down the list. Grabbing a tank and going all LERROOYY JENNKINNNNS on the process won't end too well. :)

Thank you for your recommendations everyone. After talking to her tonight and going over the options, we will be going with the Innovative Marine Fusion Pro 2.

IM Fusion Pro 2 are great tanks! What size are you gonna get?
I am eyeing the 14 AIO Peninsula /w stand, myself :)
