I have had about 20lbs of sand from an existing aquarium sitting in a brute trashcan that I want to re use. It has been kept damp but not covered in water and has been rinsed a few times as I do water changes with the same trash can. It is not going into an established tank but a new one I am setting up. Does anyone see a problem with this or can I just expect the usual N cycle?

I would wash it excessively (like beyond excessively) and dry it out in the sun before using it. I've used that method with beach sand with good success.
I wonder if a vinegar bath would be a good idea.
I imagine if you mix it up inside the container you'll get a horrible smell come out of it lol.
