Does anyone have alternatives to the RS Bubble Trap Sponge R42223-V3? Mine is for an xl425 and works great keeping bubbles out of the return but I can't see why a plastic sponge should cost $42 plus shipping.

I would suggest looking at Petco or similar for a large sponge that can be cut to fit. Should be a ton cheaper and same principle.

Also, a local LFS may have some that is intended for use on ponds. Those are usually larger, easy to cut and super cheap for how much you get. You could do this and then make a few so when they need to be cleaned, just swap them out and clean when time permits.
