Red Sea Dosing App

Hi everyone,

I'm working on a Red Sea specific dosing Android app because of my frustrations with the online dosing calculation being inaccurate, but I hit a road block when it comes to the gallon since Red Sea uses 25gal (UK) while I'm at the states and we use 26.42 gal (US) and I want to be acurate as possible.

So an app to replace their dosing app? How will you get around licensing? Or do you mean an app to dose their products? Because I really don't see why you would need an app for their products? Moonshine for sure. Or maybe I don't get it.

I'm dosing Mag, Alk, and Cal, and none of the public online dosing calcutors are acurate.

At this moment, the app is not public, and it would be to calculate those 3 supplements separately without buying any of the dosing systems they provide.

I don't see how this would be a licensing issue since I'm not affiliated in any way, shape, or form with them. It is just a calculator, which I'm not planning on selling. The app does exactly the same as the calculators in other public websites, except mine is specific for Red Sea products A, B, and C while the other besides Red Sea also have other products on it,

If lincesing id the issue, then all the websites that have supplement calculators will be in violation or whatever policy you might be thinking.

If Red Sea has their own calculator online please point me out exactly as to where I can find it.

If you want more info, here's what the app does:

Calculates individual dosing for each Calc, Mag and Alk, based on each parameter measured value, target value, and water volume of your system individually.

The app is meant to be used as a standalone app, as a calculator, and it also has a log function to track how the parameter(s) changes over time.

The app does not integrate with the Red Sea Dosing System (I'm guessing that's the calculator app you're referring to).

Since it is standalone app, you can use it to calculate your own dosing amounts with your own dosing system - as any other online dosing calculator.

It has other features that I'm working on, but again, it is not ready for public use, nor I know if I'm ever going to release it to the public, although I belive a lot of people will benefit from it. I think Red Supplements are great and that's what I use to dose my tank, which actually save my corals after a bad tank crash, and that's exactly why I decided to use Red Sea products. I'm not looking for any monetary gain, just to solve an issue.

It is not difficult, and maybe I'm overthinking. However, it will depend on how you measure the water volume of your tank to perform the calculations. Again, not difficult, but I just want to be sure if I should take that in consideration. Thanks

If whoever is using g it might use different u its of measure, i would. Its a smaller error than estimating water volume, but there’s no need to have such an error.

Thanks. I just did a little research and here are my findings. Since Red Sea is an Israeli company and typically uses metric and UK-based measurements in their documentation:

When they say, for instance:

1 ml raises Calcium by 2 ppm in 25 gallons

They're referring to:

25 Imperial gallons ≈ 113.65 liters ≈ 26.42 US gallons


I would add that logic to my app to avoid dosing errors.

I do not know if that is true. You might ask them, or check their web site and see if they give a liter based measure.

I'm checking my results against this calculator based on that approximation and they look correct:

Although the actual convertion from 25 gal (UK) is 30.0237 gal US.

I have to give a little bit more thought behind it. I asked Red Sea before, and I never got a reply from them.

Oh see I thought you were replacing their app Reefbeat with your own because you didn't like how their doser worked. You are for sure over thinking this. But hey it's better than being out on the streets slinging.
