We are going to continue discussing the reef aquarium facts submitted by our members in the My Miami chalice giveaway thread. Do you agree or disagree? What are your thoughts?

Fact #20

Mesh screen tops let the light in, let the heat out, and keep your expensive fish from jumping out.

Truth or False? What else might we need to learn on this subject?

nice photo Revh...proof of why triggers can chase divers out of their territory

Mesh tops have been shown and I would say proven to prevent fish from jumping out of the tank-providing they hit the net in such a fashion as to prevent them from achieving "escape fishocity"

Absolutely true! When I first started buying wrasses, I had no idea what jumpers they were. I learned the hard way that having a mesh top is the best way to keep those jumpers in the tank.
Since buying the 1/4" clear mesh, I have had 0 losses and now have 4 flashers in my tank along with 25 other wrasses. Well over 5000. dollars worth of fish, and are safeguarded by a fifty dollar top.

I am sure mine have staved off fatalities that I am not aware of. However, my Scott's wrasse decided to engage in some acrobatics and got caught in the net. 5+ hours under a 400w halide equals wrasse jerky. So, I think the screens definately help but aren't fullproof.

What percentage of light is cut down due to the net? 25%?

not even. I don't even think 25% was cut down by white egg crate. You don't even see any difference, when you remove them and put them back on the tank. You do with the egg crate though.

I tested both 1/4" and 1/2" mesh. Both reduced par about 15-20 percent.

not to go off topic, i remember seeing on r2r somewhere there was someone with that mesh forsale?? who was it again?

True and I think the minimal par less is nothing compared to being able to house fish such as blue spotted jawfish...;)
As for the member selling it, that was acroholic I believe...
