Reef Chemistry Question of the Day #246

If I add enough pure calcium chloride to a reef aquarium to boost the number of calcium ions per mL by one million, how many chloride ions have I added?

A. 500,000 / mL
B. 1,000,000/mL
C. 2,000,000 / mL

I changed to D. You may have had to add more than. 1,000,000 Ca/ml (and therefor more than 2,000,000 CL/ ml) to get the final concentration of Ca to increase by 1,000,000/ml.

And the answer is...

If I add enough pure calcium chloride to a reef aquarium to boost the number of calcium ions per mL by one million, how many chloride ions have I added?

C. 2,000,000 / mL

Calcium chloride, CaCl2, has two chloride ions for each calcium ion. So the number of chloride ions added is twice the number of calcium ions added.

Happy Reefing!

Does every calcium ion stay in solution? i.e. you dump it in - and test - would all of those million ions still be there - even within the time of the test? If not - then you cant tell how many Ca ions needed to boost it to 1 million/ml - so you cant tell how may cl ions you added with the information given:). Or?
