It is 36" but can cover a 48" long tank .

For 5 ft you can have the this 36" and add the 15" next to it. Thats what I did:

Yes another smaller fixture. The one I have that has 2 halide reflectors plus the 15" that has 1 reflector dor a total.of 3 for full coverage.
