I know, i just thought I'd ask you because you have a generic starfish as your profile.
I've had my linckia over a year now and he still seems to be ok. Very active but has never really grown in size. He just cruises around everywhere harmlessly hanging out.

My sand bed is 5" on 1 side of the tank and "1 on the other. He hangs out on the 5" side mostly. Also, thank you for the advice. By the way the starfish was an accidental purchase - the lfs thought i said i wanted it even though I just asked for the price, and then while purchasing other equipment and livestock the starfish was there - i told them i didn't want it but my family wanted it so they bought it.
I tried one to early on but he only lasted 6 months. If you want some sand digger cleaners get those big Tongan nacarius snails. I have like 4 in my tank to clean detritus in the sandbed.

Get one of these guys. Ther are still difficult to keep long term but with your tank maturity they can go for some time.

The thing with sand sifting stars is that a tank even very large ones simply don’t have enough food to sustain them long-term and like any stars are very sensitive to parameter swings and don’t tolerate high nutrients. But you do want to target feed a star if you can but not all of them are able to because it depends on their natural food source…and if they are willing to accept the food. For instance if a star only eats things like microfauna it’s harder to feed vs a star that’s natural diet is oysters. Of course if desperate enough a star may try and eat anything but you do want to try and feed it what they eat naturally in the wild.

Looks like the starfish isn't going to make it. He's down to pretty much no legs, just stubs. He's kind of moving though. Rip

Doesn't look like he shedded the legs - they have pieces of his flesh attached by a string on his stubs so i think someone was eating him alive

I would avoid those in the future. There are multiple ways to clean the sand with aquatic life.

What your light intensity ? I have the same tank and I too get turf or hair algae. But I, not too worried, I mechanically remove them as my corals is growing out , eventually they’ll take up all real estate. Fluconazole can help, but it’s a not long term solution.

sorry for the delayed response I didnt see this reply until now. I now run just blue lights and barely run them at all because since all my corals got overgrown by the algae and died I dont need them to be run that long. Just 5 hours of blue light at 70% intensity (2 red sea 90's).
