When I think "escape", I think of the Exuma Islands in the Caribbean with a beautiful Lady on a deserted island with pink sand beaches. Fresh Lobster, chilled wine and .....

BOTH!

however, the same rule applies to both and I give the same advice to younger folks starting out in either hobby...

Be really careful what you put in your tank and do a TON of research before taking the plunge. NO COMPULSIVE DECISIONS!!!

Follow those two rules, pay attention and be patient and you'll do great at both.

Married 17 years... three tanks. Two kids. Four dogs. One parrot. One sportscar and a minivan.

And the sports car!! Love it.

Stick with reefing. Marriage sux.

I AM the wife and I asked for the saltwater tank for Christmas last year. My husband has also wanted a saltwater tank for a long time so he had no problem with getting me one. He has been working on getting everything we need and will do all the construction, plumbing etc. We need. We are so much alike, like the same things, LOVE spending time with each other more than with anyone else. We are best friends and will always do whatever we can for each other. If you spend more time doing a hobby away from your spouse you are doing it wrong! ;)

Lol......some of these posts are funny. Around my house if I want a tank or new toys(R/C Heli's,electronic toys) I just go buy them NO asking if I can. She has her money I have own my own business have my own money. We don't ask each other if its ok we just do it. I want new truck I go get it ,she does the same. I pay half of the bills so does she..........works out great!

You and your husband are part of the 25% of the marrages that work (aprox), 50% of all marrages end in divorce, and the final 25% (I know very round numbers) are couples who feel stuck in the relationship for whatever reasons and are either unable or unwilling to get a divorce.

Not very good odds on a marrage working out in the long term.

I started a reef tank again because I wanted to, I do not need to discuss my decision with anyone except myself. If the Lady I am with dose not like my decision(s) about anything she is welcome to move on to someone else.

Selfesh some might think? That is why I am and always have been single, if the Lady I am with complains she is welcome to leave and I will find another, there is always another Lady.

What hobbies I enjoy and activities I take up are for my personal enjoyment, if a Lady happens to enjoy what I am doing then she is more than welcome to enjoy it as well, if not she has no right to complain. When I want to tak off for a week or two to someplace exotic I will ask if the Lady I am seeing would like to come along, I will make reasonable accomidations according to her schedule and always cover any and all expenses because she is my guest.

There is no reason for marrage unless the couple would like to have children.

Good plan as long as you are not married, tie the legal knot and a man is setting himself for a world of finical hurt if things go poorly, as I said unless there is a want/need or desire for children there is no need to enter into the legally binding marrage contract.

I've been married 38 years and reefing 2 years, fresh water planted tanks 20 years. It's easy when you love your wife and your wife loves your reef.

My beautiful and lovely wife truly respects my hobby. She likes to see it from time to time, and takes very seriously the task of feeding went I am not at home.

When we first met and decided to move together I sold all my reef tank just to have the money to support our life together. As such she know that in a case of crisis marriage and kids will always come first.

This avoids a huge amount of issues as there is a full respect and transparency in all the reef spending.

That said ... maintenance and good husbandry is needed in both and take roughly the same amount of time ... ;)

Very well said! I'd like to think I wouldn't have to sell everything off....but it is definitely a testimate itself and will probably happen.

Need to hide your expenses bills!
Haha, or, have her pick out your goodies. She probably won't like names like home wrecker though ... and that's a decent piece.

We have been married for 32 years. Started with a freshwater tank(27 gallons). Then 3 years ago got a 29 Biocube, then 2 years ago she surprised me by saying we need a bigger tank. Now have a 93 gallon cube, 4 biocubes (2 14 gallon & 2 29 gallon) and the freshwater tank(I want to convert it to saltwater, but she saying no for now. We divide up cleaning the tanks, she does the small ones I get the big tank. She doesn't care too much for the technical part of the tanks just wants a nice reef.
