Sand has a ton of surface area to house our processers so yes you can remove it but very very slowly so the system can adjust.

Otherwise you may end up with a big problem

I get my RO from the lfs each week, I’ll test my next batch and see if that’s the issue as I’ve tried everything to lower it
Have you tried dosing DIY Coral Snow mixed with bacteria?

Legend has it that by doing so after you blow off all the rocks and stuff, the Cyano can't compete.

Might not work, but it's a super cheap and accessible option.

Bare bottomed tanks show detritus.
Sufficient, well directed flow should make this a non-issue

With out the sand you will need to replace the surface area.
Rock, whether 'real', mined, or manufactured (even a minimal amount) will contain sufficient surface area for nitrification.

Hermits will be fine in a bare bottom tank. I have them in all of mine.
Facts.

More facts.
