Removing sand from a sump.

I added sand to my system and the fine mist of dust has collected on the surfaces of the sump. What's the best way of removing it aside from a wet vac?
 
How do you siphon something when the tube outside the tank is not longer than the tube inside the tank? Is there s trick to it? Or maybe a pump?
 
I wonder if a python hose attached to my sink would remove it, since its a suction type of device.
