I’m wanting to upgrade my lighting to the AI T5-hybrid fixture, but I need to convince my wife to let me hang it from the ceiling first, she thinks it will look ugly, I’m hoping it would be barely noticeable.

This is where I need help from the community! I’m looking for ideas/pictures of clean hanging light fixture installs to convince my wife it won’t look bad!

Thanks all

Personally, I think it's barely noticeable and my wife hasn't complained (about the light that is). This is a std Sunpower 6x54W.

I personally don’t think hanging from ceiling is more ugly than any other mounting system.. I just set up a hybrid and think it looks good, very easy to do and lots of room to work in and around tank. Not the best picture and I still need to paint the ceiling hooks white but gives you a idea..

Thanks for the picture. You have a very nice setup, she shouldn’t have too much to complain about! I like the cabinet too, wish I had room for one.

Looks very nice to me! I agree hanging seems to keep a pretty minimal look, which seems less ugly to me also.

I’m wanting to pick one of these up too but I’m also not sure I’ll get the OK to mount it to the ceiling (plus I’ve never tried that before). There doesn’t seem to be anyone making legs for this thing (great opportunity for someone savvy enough to build them!). Any more pictures of this ceiling mounted? Are those loops of cable right above the fixture just extra cord that can be cut away to make it look a bit cleaner? Also is there any good way to hide that wire coming from the fixture (and is it only one cord? assuming the LED plugs directly into the fixture?). Thanks!

Yes the coiled up wire could be cut to get rid of it. I only keep it in case I want to lower the light. It is not 1 cord. I modified my hybrid light to only 1 cord and the LED's cords (yes 2) are zip tied to the single one from the hybrid. The hybrid light's cords come out of each end. Mine is modified to a single cord to come out the middle of the back.

Forgot to update this thread and let everyone know that I got the okay to get the fixture and got it hung up.

Cutting the coiled cable would make for a cleaner install, but I’m afraid I’ll want that length back some day

Your tank looks a lot like mine, I’ve got the JBJ 45 AIO. I think I might go ahead and try it out. It looks like you have just one cord coming out of the fixture? Is the LED plugged into the fixture itself?

Mine is the jbj rl-45. You’ll want to get the smaller side plates (get the newer cable hiding ones for the same price as the old).
The cord you see coming out is actually the 3 light cords just bundled with Velcro for a slightly cleaner appearance.

Do you mean these? https://www.bulkreefsupply.com/decor-endcap-for-hybrid-fixtures-aquatic-life.html

That Velcro wrap is nice, makes it looks like one cord coming out. That with @Wbr46797 wall plate idea might be cleaner looking than my current setup with RMS mount.

Hybrid fixture with 4 Kessil 160's over a 75g standard. Built the open canopy out of 1 x 10's with 1 x 3's for the moulding. Before suspending from the ceiling the fixture was hanging from a shelf behind the tank and it was very cluttered.

Spots on the wall are patches that need to be painted.

Power strip and all wires for the lighting are enclosed in the canopy and the only wire hanging
off the back is the one for the power strip. Much better than the spaghetti that was hanging off
the back previously.
