Hey every one, I recently started my home based store, and looking for what size tanks would be best for holding fish. Currently I’m using 55 gallon tanks but find there too tall. I’d like to build something around 48 - 60 inches long, but not sure on the height and width.

I’d keep the bottom tanks undivided for the bigger fish, then the top tanks divided for smaller fish.

if any stores have suggestions or advice that would be great as well! The 55 gallons work, but, just a pain.

Most stores I’ve been to use 20 longs linked together or something similar. Really just depends on your goals and the turnover.

I’d stick with what you’ve got till you need to change due to a lack or space or some other reason. Starting a business is slow and expensive.

It most definitely is slow and expensive, I’m glad I’m just doing it on the side, and not relying on it to support my life

IMO most shops have tanks that are way too big, it makes the fish too hard to catch. They don't need that much space, it's not permanent.

My favorite shop just installed 6'x6'x10" tanks that are divided further into what looks like 8 or 10" cubicles. It makes it easy to look at fish from the top and not through dirty glass, and it's easy to siphon out detritus and uneaten food when it collects. Netting them is a breeze when there's only 1 fish per cubicle.

How many times have you wanted a fish in a community shop tank that has a big rock in the middle, and the fish you want to look at is continuously hiding behind the rock? And then the shop keeper has to take the rock out, use 2 nets and scare the tarnation out of all the fish, maybe even injuring some of them. Now you have detritus and junk floating around and your fish that's now in a bag has a respiration rate of 250. That's just a dumb way to display fish for sale.
