I'm working on a stand and sump upgrade for my shallow 80. I picked up the sump months ago and tucked it away till I was ready to start plumbing.

After painting the sump I noticed the return section is a little skinny... It's just over 4". The return I'd like to use is a jebao dct 8000 I believe, and specs online put it at 4.3" wide (it's in use on my current setup).

BUT, there's an oscilating bench sander in my shop with a bunch of fresh belts just sitting around doing nothing AND it looks like there's atleast 1/4" on each side of the pump that's all bottom mounting bracket.

What are the chances I can shave off those jebao love handles and get this pump where it needs to be?

It's possible to do what you asked, but IMO you are asking for trouble. I've found that a tight fit for a return pump usually ends up with excess pump noise as it vibrates and rattles against the sump wall.

If it is just the base mount then they slide off (at least on my DCT it does) but either sliding it off or shaving the edges off would remove the sound dampening feet on the bottom. And if it is still going to be touching the sides you will get pump noise. If you are able to wrap it in a thin silicone pad (like the ones used for opening stuck jars) and still have it not touch the walls then it should be fine.

I would just cut out the return baffle and put it back in over a bit.
