Anyone using the ice cap drop in uv sterilizer? Searched and cant find any user reviews of it. The simplicity of it is nice. Also noticed ice cap rates there uvs for bigger tanks than other brands. Would the 40 watt be fine a 375 gallon display? Any feedback appreciated!
 
If they don't specify flow rate and/or dosage rate, then it's going to be "impossible" to setup specifically vs parasites. (The listed dosage rates would be insufficient vs parasites. Presumably this is the dosage at the default flow rate.)

What are you trying to target with UV?

Main thing would be parasites for fish.
 
You might have to double- or triple-up on UV units to hit the right dosage then – can they be run in serial, or just parallel? Maybe reach out to Ice Cap and see if they have a specific recommendation before you unload $$, eh?

FYI, "some UV" is going to be better than "no UV", but where parasites are a target you really need it to be operating at maximum potential if you want it to the job you think it will do.

Most fish can't withstand much of an outbreak (ie being around a sick fish) before succumbing themselves.

Proper strong UV (plus other measures for bio-security and vs stress) will expand the safe timeframe for them, and in combination with other things like herbal treatments which slow infection rates and micron filtration like Marinland's polishing filters that can remove swarmers directly, and even ozone (with some limits) you can eliminate outbreaks entirely.

Obviously, you still have to treat sick fish, but don't underestimate the value of avoiding an outbreak. Everyone from Sun Tzu to Benjamin Franklin has recognized this kind of truism.

Sometimes there is no better option, but at least consider less-risky treatments than copper and formalin for everything. Most folks don't seem to allow for any consideration here, but that seems unwise to me.

Formalin is both dangerous to handle and dangerously easy to do wrong and kill your fish. It is specifically NOT recommended for treating recently stressed fish because it's so harsh!* Old school copper is marginally better to work with. Chelatead copper is popular and easier to use (thus a little safer) than old school copper, but I'm not sure it works as well as old style copper, which itself wasn't even 100% effective. <100% would be OK, but I'm pretty sure most folks think 100% when they engage these treatments...which leads to surprises.

Think: Comprehensive strategy.
Do not think: Miracle cure.

So, I just got an IceCap In-Sump 40W UV Sterilizer, which comes with an EVO 2000 feed pump.

The pump is rated at a maximum of 528 GPH, but according to the UV sterilizer’s manual, the recommended flow rates are:
  • 940 GPH for bacteria & algae control
  • 300 GPH for parasite control
I get that I can dial it down to 300 GPH if I’m targeting parasites, but here’s where I’m confused. Even at full power, the included pump only does 528 GPH, which is almost half of what’s recommended for bacteria and algae.

So how do I set this thing up properly to hit that 940 GPH flow rate? Am I missing something here? Do I need a stronger feed pump, or is the included one supposed to be enough?
 
From everything I’ve watched, the only way you can target both is with separate units as they require complete opposite flows. Seems suspect, Ryan and Elliot suggested for these types of recommendations, I’d assume its a marketing plow and not actually functionality

Yep I’d assume you would need a larger pump beyond what they provided which is annoying
 
Good catch on the rpm, sounds like it’s just available for parasite control for now. Where do you even put it? In what chamber? A closed loop in the sump, just repossessing the same water? Is it just for aio?

Not a chance way too small if that is stated rating effective rating is what counts. All of the ones I looked at like that have a crazy cost for new bulbs. I bought 2 Green Monsters piece of Garbage light burns out in no time , so be cautious I like Geek products on Amazon. Not submersible but way better bang for the buck even after adding a pump cost.

Its called the dose rate its expressed by a mathematical formula which is connected to the effective intensity for the lack of a better word. Dose ( mJ ( mili Joule ) which is a standard expression of energy / cm squared ) = Intensity expressed as mW (milli watts )/ cm squared. So if your light does not have a strong enough rating you cant slow the rate down enough to get the proper dose. Be aware that you cant kill off all parasites some you can only control as the parasite exists in different stages and if its not in the stage where its free floating you cant kill it. A member pointed out that it will also kill the photo Plankton the Corals need for food so not to use a UV. My approach would be to use it for parasite control during an outbreak and turn it off when no problem . Just my opinion and calculations are from research I am not a mathematician just a grunt with logic. If you want I can calculate your dose if you give me your flow rate in litres / hour , or Gallons per Hour , chamber volume , which if it is a cylinder which I am sure it probably is V = phi 3.14159 x radius squared x length , and your effective UVC wattage not the manufacturers stated wattage
 
Just installed the 40 watt after learning i now have an ich management tank. My hippo tang had an outbreak. All fish were quarantined. But i had gotten some inverts from lfs. Dory got over it in a week and was a champ and helps she is morbidly obese. Was back ordered all january. Only downside is flow control is kind of “wing it”. Will see how it goes.
 
Just installed the 40 watt after learning i now have an ich management tank. My hippo tang had an outbreak. All fish were quarantined. But i had gotten some inverts from lfs. Dory got over it in a week and was a champ and helps she is morbidly obese. Was back ordered all january. Only downside is flow control is kind of “wing it”. Will see how it goes.
Sounds like its doing its job. I ended up with a 90 watt lifeguard for my 375. May still pick up one of these for my 120.
 
marine and reef had them last weekend, went out of stock in a day, got them back in friday and i ordered yesterday. out again today, at least the 40w. recommend click on notify when in stock for email .

what size is your tank? i have a 120g. planning on turning the flow all the way to the lowest. i assume the only control is in the dial. is there anything on the pump itself?

It is well publicized the Dose requirement which is an actual calculation involving the volume of your UV light intensity and flow. The flow is a fairly large range
