Hey guys. I just wanted to check and make sure I am thinking straight before I make this order. Is the RKL able to ramp lights? I can get the controller and the basic light for $10 less then just the ramping model. So if I can do that then it is a no brainer obviously since a controller is on my list anyway.

It can ramp certain lights depending on the drivers of the light. You also need the alc module (advanced light control) it also can run their moonlight pods with it.

I am getting one of the sb Reef lights. Maybe Mike can chime in, I would tag him, but I don't know how lol. So you are saying I can't ramp lights with just the RKL and that I would have to order this alc module for it to work? The basic lights do not have a moonlight channel, but that's ok because I have a spare actinic led bar I could use for moonlighting if needed. I'm really leaning towards the elite, but I also really want a controller lol. My other half was giving me the raised eyebrow at the price of the light, so I don't think I could bat my eyes enough to convince him I need the elite and the controller haha:D

The RKL or RKE will require the ALC module. It has two 0-10 volt control outputs. It can also control two DA lunar pods if you want. The Archon has 4 0-10 volt outputs without an additional module.

Ok I understand. Now to decide which route I want to go. What would you do if you had to choose and why?

What are you looking to automate on your tank other than the lights?

Eventually everything. But for now I will be happy with just the lights and the heater. I am replacing all my powerheads with RWs so they won't need connected. My ato is gravity fed so that won't be connected either.

If you are looking at eventually controlling everything. you will want to plan it out. One limitation to the RKL is that it can only handle 4 modules. This will limit your expansion options later. The RKE can handle up to 63. The Archon has no limitations for modules, and has built in 0-10v ports for controlling your lighting (no ALC needed), and many other great options including being able to control the RW series of pumps so you are not requited to use 2 different controllers.

Oh I don't think I will need quite that many lol. I only have a 45 and I don't plan on going much bigger. I've tried monster tanks and they just aren't for me. And I think the archon is a bit much for me. I doubt I would even be able to get it set up lol.

I am controlling a 42 gallon hex tank with the Archon. I use three power bars and a SL2 module at the tank. I have 13 modules total on the system at this time. You would be surprised at how much you can find to control. Most of the modules are compatible between the RKL, RKE and Archon so you can upgrade if needed in the future. It is just less expense if you start out with the higher level controller.
