Hello,

Does anyone know how I can properly store DI media? I buy my media from BRS but saw the prices of @Buckeye Hydro and they make more sense. I was looking into getting the 5lbs of mixed, cation, and 2lbs of anion.

I have mine in the plastic bags from the vendor that are closed tight with rubber bands and those bags are then stored in a bucket with airtight lid. Without it they would start absorbing too much moisture and the fish/amine-smell from the anion resin would spread throughout my home

I'm from Germany, so I don't have access to BRS (as far as I know) and don't know Buckeye Hydro to be honest. I source my DI-resin from other shops wherever I manage to get resins of decent quality. I have 4 in-line TDS meters and the Hanna Instruments UPW which goes far below 1ppm TDS so I can verify how well the resin performs.

Assuming you are working with a reputable vendor who packages the resin correctly, then just keep the media inside the vendor supplied packaging. If you buy from Buckeye Hydro, our resin is packaged in single refill quantities. The "plastic bag" the resin is vacuum sealed inside is a special kind of material called vapor barrier - no gasses or "vapor" pass through it. This is not the case for standard plastic bags or zip lock bags.

Are you talking about buying in larger quantities that 7.5 lbs? We package these larger quantities a bit differently, but the storage approach is the same - use the special bags we ship it in.

Anybody know if Resintech MBD-15 DI resin would be good for refilling our DI cartridges?

I didn't realize there were so many different DI resins available on the market. and I know absolutely nothing about any of them. I tried finding a local source for DI resin and I think I did, but they sold a bunch of different resins, way more than I anticipated. They actually specialize in building large commercial filtration systems for like semi-conductor chip manufacturers, etc.. and other businesses that need ultra-pure water. They were NOT a bunch of reefers, I can tell you that. They didn't really have anything aquarium related and the room full of filtration engineers seemed to be thrown for a loop when I asked what DI resin they recommended for filtering water for my saltwater reef tank. lol. I got back a bunch of blank stares and puzzled looks and then they all seemed to settle on and recommend the MBD-15 resin for mixed bed use.
one guy said the MBD-15 was a step up from the standard resin and is what he recommended anytime someone mentioned an aquarium....

after doing some digging, it appears that MBD-30 resin is what I've mostly used in the past. The DI cartridges that I've purchased off Amazon said they were color changing MBD-30 nuclear grade.

Seems MBD-30 is the most common (?) mixed bed resin in the reefing world, but I'm not finding much info out there on the MBD-15 variety that my local filtration company recommended.

just looking at the spec sheets for MBD-15 vs 30, it would appear that they are very similar, with the MBD-15 having maybe 10% higher capacity (?) than the MBD-30 from what I can tell, but other than that, I don't see a whole lot of difference between them.

treats 93,195 gallons of 2 TDS water
treats 1864 gallons of 100 TDS water
treats 186 gallons of 1000 TDS water

MBD-15
0.55 meq/mL
treats 102,515 gallons of 2 TDS water
treats 2050 gallons of 100 TDS water
treats 205 gallons of 1000 TDS water

So looks like the MBD-15 resin can filter approx 10% more than MBD-30 before being exhausted.
I typically get 2-3 TDS out of my RO membrane, going into my DI stage, so either option should last me a good long while.

Was just hoping somebody who knows more about this than me can tell me this MBD-15 resin is safe to use and won't kill my fish. lol.
