Im new to the forums and just starting this hobby for the first time. I do a lot of research and planning prior to manufacturing anything. Reading the forums here I see a lot of good ideas along with a wealth of information. Im a very experienced plumber. Most of the designs ive seen posted here look great and will be implementing a similar design.

Water Storage :

My question is regarding some of the water storage set ups Im seeing posted. I will be constructing an acrylic 150 tank with sump. Im figuring 200 gallons total. My plan is to have a small automated reservoir next to the sump operating under float and timer to control water level. This will feed to the sump witch will also have similar or store bought controls.
I am planning on using a brute garbage can or cans as storage, however I have not seen much written as to why there are 2 equal size tanks. One for fresh rodi water and one for mixed saltwater , yes. My thinking was I would run my rodi unit into a smaller container about the size of a 5 gallon bucket but square, controlled by float . I would or could have 2 drain outlets. One to the salt water mixing reservoir to be controlled per need and one feeding the top off system next to the sump. I could keep the brute container filled all of the time after each water change or I could fill it the day before planned water exchange. Since I will always be present for an exchange I could spray and drain the brute container, keeping it clean, if that is a concern.

I am still stuck on why I need a large freshwater reservoir in addition to a mixing storage reservoir. Since nearly every picture I saw has 2 equally large containers, there has to be a reason Im not seeing.

Good Day !

I don't know of a specific reason for having two identical containers. Having two containers of equal size makes piping easier since the setups will be very similar, but only slightly easier. Maybe most in this hobby just appreciate symmetry. :)

If you have a good, robust system to add fresh water, then you could probably get away with a smaller freshwater storage vessel.

I have two large but not identical containers. One is 35 gallons norwesco tank for salt water mixing and storage. The other is a 28 gallon brute and its contents depends on what I need. Either RODI water or sometimes more salt water. I have my RODI unit plumbed into both containers with float switches as well as my auto top off. I also have ball valves to each so I can direct the water where I want it to go and I don't trust the float valves not to fail. I don't really use the 28 gal container much but it is nice to have when I need it.
It does take about 10 hours to fill my SW reservoir.

Thanks for the replies. I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything. I'd like to set it up one time, and get it right !
