There’s a story on BattleCorals about them running that high and how well their corals responded. About half way down the page in the link

I remember that write up....
I think the consensus is that some coral do fine while others do not....don’t think I’ll be trying that anytime soon :p
I agree I stick with 35ppt

BRS did a study that elevated elements (alk, Ca, Mg and so forth) led to better growth. By running higher salinity, you’re adding more elements. I’d imagine using Red Sea coral pro would aid in this without running such a high SG.

I remember those 2 videos but don’t recall them saying they raise salinity. Guess I have something to rewatch after the kids go to sleep as I very well may have missed that!

They didn’t raise salinity, they dosed elements at higher levels. But there are salts that have elevated elements out there where you don’t need to raise salinity to get those desired elements.

I can see how it comes off like that. I meant if you run a higher salinity, you’re adding more elements. However, if the tank uses up those elements and you’re not dosing, it doesn’t mean that the tank is actually running at higher elements. Hope that makes sense. :p

Completely understand, and that’s why BattleCorals per their write up do it.

I don't think that running 38 ppt is a huge issue, you are just that much closer to a problem is something gets out of whack... less margin for error.

I doubt that you will see better growth.
