How would one know if one is better quality than another?

That can be hard to know without someone testing them. The whole reason Consumer Reports exists.

Unbranded refractometers are likely a substantial risk, IMO. But branding doesn't necessarily mean good. The Hanna conductivity meters, for example, seem prone to issues.
