I have what is probably a 1st gen 1" sea swirl. I've had to replace the motor and linkage once, about 6 years ago, and that replacement only lasted about 2 years. It died of the same cause that the original motor died from, moisture ingress. The SeaSwirl is a great idea, on paper, but the version I have seems to not have taken waterproofing into account at all in design. Are the latest generation sealed better than this? I mean, the motor is running off 120V AC, which really doesn't seem like a good idea.

I know the latest gen uses 24V AC, and if you want a new motor for an existing unit like mine, you have to send it in and have them do a conversion for you. I'm not spending $250 on a new motor, as that's more than what I bought the unit for 15 years ago.

I just ordered 4 from Ed. You are correct, the ones I am receiving are 24v. However, I think the design is the same. He has to drill the side you want the cord to poke out. And he says you want that facing outward so it doesn’t get wet. I asked him the question how long will these last since you (Ed) are semi retired. He states 6-10 years provided you don’t hold the nozzle as it’s spinning. I’m new to the Sea Swirl world. I have had a heck of a time getting him to understand how my eurobrace is configured. I’ve sent pictures and measurements more than once. But again, I am new to the sea swirl game.

Take a look at the Ocean Seawaves from Champion Lighting ,this company will make what ever you want ,they are competitive and they are about to produce the semi commmercial one called the Pacific Pro ,you can alter the speed and angle ,mount any type of magnetic wave maker too it ,it’s telescopic and the mega bracket allows for installation to 95% of braced tank systems

I have a pair of 1" Sea Swirls that are coming up on 8 years now. Still working great. I also have a 3/4" model that is older but this one I did need to replace the motor inside. I'm guessing this kit dates back to 2002 give or take as I was running it on my 100 gallon system at the time.

If one is does not need the return aspect of it Ed sells the sweep version which is what the Ocean Seawaves are trying to copy above. Which ever one you end up going with just remember that the power head at the end can generate a lot of torque depending on the flow pattern and intensity.

My original question stands, regarding this other unit: How is the waterproofing on it? Can't stand how so many high end items intended for reef tank use are not appropriately sealed against water damage. I'll go even further to comment that's a lot of money for a 3-D printed item that is probably using off-the shelf cheap chinese parts in it.

Does Ed have a R2R account or is there a better way to contact him? I'm interested in purchasing a couple

Hit him at his website. He is super easy to get a hold of. The 4 swirls I have are great. A little big, but do exactly what I want.

I have 2 I have been running for 9 months now. I'm not sure how water could get in them unless you dropped it in the tank. The unit is sealed.

I have 4 sea sweeps with Tunze 6255 eco's they are much better than the 8 MP60's they replaced on my 500 gallon, lower wattage and quieter as well. The oscillating, random flow just can be beat by any type of stationary pump.

I run the same, 2 6255's. Best random flow with minimal pumps in the tank. One 6255 and a Sweep is only around $100 more than an mp60. Great flow for the money., imo.

and much better than a MP60, You will never constantly blast a coral with a sea sweep like you will with a vortehc

I think the next great advancement for flow will be more variations of oscillating powerheads instead of ones that just ramp up and down linear flow.

Ecotech (or Tunze) needs to design a powerhead that has a sealed submersible body with the oscillation motor and uses a magnet type setup like the vortech's to connect and sweep the main prop back and forth, this would be a huge game changer for flow.

Also they are Sea Sweeps. The Sea Swirl is for your return.
Or, like me, each has a closed loop. I’ve got pictures here:

Would two sea swirls or two sea sweeps be better for a 48"x24"x20"?

What size tank are those on and what size Tunze are you running?

Sea sweeps are going to have more flow depending on the powerhead you choose to attach to them.

Sea swirls require more plumbing from your return line or other closed loop.

Sweeps are much simpler to setup.
