top pic is under heavy royal blue and a bit of editing.

Bottom pic looks to be under 14k lighting. And surrounded by other cynarina of the same colors. One might be pink/blue

I get what you are saying, The eye of sauron should still be visible even under 14k. And it doesnt even appear. I would be a bit steamed if you can't pull that out with 20k. But, cynarinas are about true to their colors even at 14k. So... I would be making a bit of a fuss.

I would call and ask the vendor. It could be still acclimating to your conditions in the tank (I don't know when you received it compared to your pictures). Show him your pictures. To me it looks like the same coral with either different lighting - and or filtering in the photo

I feel your pain.
This is what I have come to expect when I am shopping on line.
Not all vendors, but I have to tell myself that these
ladies of the night
are all painted up and not going to look the same when they arrive on my doorstep.

It's hard to find web advertisements that refrain from
putting make-up on the faces of the corals but when you do
Stick with them.
And let us know when you find one.
Post pictures of the good guys corals from the web
and what shows up in the box when it arrives.


The most reliable I have found are the phytoplankton sellers
green, thin green, dark green, yellow green,

Final tip
When you look on line and see a coral that stops your heart
ask yourself one, or two questions
Have I ever seen a coral in person that looked as nice
Then examine the price tag and ask if you would buy it locally if you could see what it actually looks like?

Always want to send Dirty Harry over to these vendors after I get punked, myself.

(and yes, i’ve seen cyn/indos with colors like the vendors pic…)

what i have is just two shades of brown.

really wanted that red eye against the goldish yellow flesh…

Seeing is no longer believing. TBH most vendors photos are so unbelievable to me I don't even shop online. Im not great but I spent a few years as a pretty serious amateur photographer editing photos in PS and LR and I'm always baffled how people ooh and ah over edited images. Some will say the photos are just taken under different lighting. While that is true there is some heavy editing to make images look like they do on vendors sights. Heck even many of the coral photos posted here on R2R look unbelievable to my eyes but here it's for fun not for profit.

Few vendors keep it real. Most have kept to coloring up pics.

The red eye and green border would have been the only reason I would have nabbed the cynarina. I just don't trust wysiwyg anymore.

I have absolutely no sympathy for people willing to ignore what are obvious photo enhancements and extremely blue/purple casts to everything else in the photo -- and assume that the coral -- ANY CORAL -- will looks like that under any reasonable lighting with the naked eye.

One has to suspend disbelief and common sense to think otherwise -- let alone start a thread asking if they should be upset.

Yeah going to RAP was nice because I got to actually see what the coral legitimately looked like rather than the sites photo's. And the people that used strong lighting to pull off the colors I was able to ask and get the same results at home. Its definitely a crapshoot online even from the most reputable sellers and it seems to just be a part of the coral merchants culture. Its selling you a photograph, and then its up to you to decide if you can be happy with it not being exactly the same.
