I have been Debating on getting a clown tang for awhile now I had one before but I was worried about aggression issues so I returned it. My tank is now much more aggressive than it was before it is 180 gallon tank however I will be upgrading to an 800 gallon very soon.
My tank mates are
Miniatus grouper - 5 inch
Passer angelfish - 5.5 inch
Marine betta - 6 inch
Red breasted hogfish 6 inch

Clown tangs are nice but I sure do miss my sohal tang. That was a big beautiful fish, stunning. I can't wait to see what you choose. Sounds like an amazing tank.

Sohal tangs are easier to keep than clowns. Clowns don’t ship as well, are susceptible to a lot of diseases, and having a high flow, oxygen rich environment is almost necessary. Every instance of long term success that I’ve seen with them involves a wave maker of some sort. If you’ve had success with them without the wave maker that’s great. They’re also two of the most aggressive tangs. If you decide on either, I’d add it last/add it with all other tangs at the same time, and get one that’s smaller than the other tangs in the tank.

As for the future stock list, majestics are one of the most passive large angelfish in my experience. If you want a more aggressive Pomacanthus angelfish, an Emperor or French angel would be able to hold their own better. I’ve done it plenty of times, but it’s always risky mixing angels, especially Holacanthus angels like the Passer and Queen. That genus is one of the most aggressive compared to other genus of angelfish. The stock list would probably work in an 800 gallon, but some of the fish, like the Passer, Clown/Sohal, and Miniatas tend to be some of the most aggressive species in their respective classifications. Just something to consider when stocking the tank.

I don’t get how a stingray dying is funny it was a question for the future and I don’t get why you think that joking about it is funny. The stingray was completely fine and if it was not because of a stupid chemical I would be fine. also it is stupid cause why would I get a sohal and a clown tang they both are going to fight to the death.

Thanks for this I have had a sohal before however I have heard the same thing about shipping issues with other fish. I live in the uk so that problem is mainly solved as most fish for me eat immediately. Also thanks for the concern about future stocking I am getting an emperor soon. I am not really that big of a fan of the French angels though what about a blue ring I have heard they can be nasty. Maybe a Chinese blue line aswell?

Juvenile Blue rings are very timid, but they definitely get more aggressive when they get bigger. Mine became very territorial once her adult colors began to come in. In my experience, blue lines are not as aggressive, but they’re able to hold their own. Wild caught blue lines are a little harder to keep, but if you’re able to find one, captive raised blue lines do very well.

Thanks I probably will go for a blue ring then and let him grow out of my other tank so he gets big enough to hold his own Also because your saying about clown tangs being hard to keep I know a sohal can be a better replacement but I don’t want to spend £200 is there another tang I could replace with around the £60 mark or $80?

Hi mate I got the emperor yesterday and all is well he is tiny right now so I am going to wait untill he gets about 4 inches to add into the actual tank just so he does not get eaten. I also got a baby sailfin tang and freckle face tang too and I am doing the same for them too will be getting a blue ring soon

Good choices. Sounds like a good plan. Emperors grow relatively quickly for an angel if they are fed well. Just realize that your miniatas has the potential to grow very quickly. Miniatas and Polleni are my favorite groupers.

I had a polleni very nice grouper. Sadly died to a tank crash from velvet also how quick does the emperor grow I think a 3 or 4 inch one should be big enough as it is a plate shape so the grouper can’t really swallow it
