should I put sand in Frag tank?

I have a new frag only system I just set up. It's a 90 gallon 72"x24"12" with tons of rock and a bubble king mini 180 skimmer. I have the whole system cycled and ready to go. Now that I look at I i'm questioning if I should have put sand in the tank. the only reason I was thinking about doing it was you can stick frag plugs in the sand therefore increasing the capacity of my tank. I'm going to be keeping mostly SPS and some Chalices and Acans. What would you guys do? also how hard is it to add the sand with water already in the tank if I do go that route?

I'd prob say no, but then again it depends on what kinda flow you depend on having in there. I have sand in a 29g softy tank right now, but am sorta hating it. The more flow you put through it, the more the sand leaves the tank and lands in the sump or another tank! Personally, I'm all for a bare bottom frag tank, can push plenty of flow through it w/o any issues w/ substrate disappearing.

In my frag tank i have a very thin layer of the larger ARM Calcium reactor media.

It allows SPS, yumas, leathers, etc to attach then be easily glued to rocks etc. I have a rack for the SPS.

I would recommend no, if you want to have flow of any significance you never have to worry about sand blowing around. With the media you can get more deitrus trapped. For frags on the bottom the solution is to get disks for frags on the bottom. that's my advice.

I agree as well, especially with this point - With the media you can get more deitrus trapped. I just removed all of the CA reactor media I used for substrate from my frag tank as it was a huge nutrient sink with detritus! It is bare bottom now!

i put crushed coral in mine.

I keep mine bare bottom then have two 20" X 12" trays in there that I keep sand in. I do this to keep things like clams, open brains, etc. I also have one tray with the cours calcium media in there that I put loose zoas, ricordea, etc.
