I really want to get some, but I have a blue spotted puffer that might eat it (although he doesn't care about any of the snails in the tank so who knows) and I do slightly worry it might impact my population of copepods as I plan to add a mandarin dragonet in the future.

I got my first feather duster hitchhiker today but it is hiding in a spot where I simply cannot convince my camera to focus well enough to see anything
I assume you are using your phone, most phones have a "pro" camera that will let you manually adjust the focus. That's what I do for most of my shots.
