trying to see if mine is. Sometimes it gets pretty dark but when it extends it gets almost a pink color.

the term "black" is so misleading I wish and when I bought mine was called some fancy purple something or other they should be call dark purple but as we all now names sell in the hobby now better for worse. I almost bought 2 more heads but thought then might be the same so I sent a pic and thy confirmed that indeed my dark purple was there black. so glad I did. in the end I love it, but names can get confusing for sure and not having a LFS around I have to trust online vendors not to over edit there photos for the sale.
so many factors such as lighting, tank conditions, how the photo was taken editing all play a part.

but in the end if we have a nice torch we love then that is all that matters.

Very nice. Mine was super dark with thick sweepers. Very rare to find.

Here's mine dark purple "black" with gold tip. I have a regular purple with green tip 2 back from this. In person, the one in front is darker purple than the regular purple.

Hard to tell, but there are times under the blue light where you can't see the tentacles at all and only the gold heads waving around. Really cool. The last one under white light shows the tentacles look more black than purple.

Some nice ones.

Some sort of flat worm took mine out :(
I've had issues with these worms and torches as well.

Interestingly I just watched a video from Than and he mentions these worms. What he says is exactly what I have experienced.

Hard to detect
Resistant to dip
Haven't seen anything that eats them

When I dipped one of mine in bayer I checked the bottom of the container and did. See a flatworm. However, it was too far gone and never recovered.
