I'm in a hurricane now so anything that takes power freaks me more. I have that so I can run filters then run light as it's a 110 inverter. Comming from the car through a doggy door and 2 my tank waiting

Best of luck bud. I have a whole house genie but it's not auto start. I have to go out and give it a pull to get it running but it will run everything I have.

1. Size: I have a 75 gallon bare bottom (white acrylic sheet to protect the bottom).
2. Bioload: Mixed reef-chalices, caps, leathers, shrooms etc. 2 clowns, mandarin dragonette, yellow tang.
3. Light: single 48” T8 actinic and a 24” white dual bulb T5 ( I’ve had a couple cheap LEDs come in and out of the mix).
4. Filtration: Filstar Cannister filter with carbon, filter floss, lava rock (to make up for lost anaroebic bacteria from the bare bottom) and purigen
5. Extra Equipment: I run a homemade skimmer, small internal uv sterilizer, 2 powerheads and 2 small heaters on either side of the tank. (Hoping to eliminate the skimmer, which is weak, and the uv sterilizer by adding a HOB media reactor and running GFO.)
6. Additives: within the past couple weeks my Calcium and Alk have been low and out of wack so I’m starting to two part dose using the old recipe Oceans Blend Calc and Alk.
7. I do water changes every week, usually just 5 gallons, and once every two weeks (sometimes once a month) I dump, scrub, and refresh the media in the canister.

In my experence lava rock will leach iron back being it’s expanded metal and dirt. Go with marine pure or those newer plates that are super dense but hold the same load of bacteria population so can fit.

My main was this 20g and had racks all over for corals. Now it’s my sebea and breeder tank and QT for new SPS corals.

I no longer have to replace the phosguard with no coral food floating about to cause the PO4 above 80ppm. Made a skimmer for it but don’t need it with PO4 at .1

Last pic is from 6 months ago

Noted about the lava rock, never thought of that but it makes sense. It's cool you're using a bio wheel, my dad is taking down a freshwater 60g cube that I plan to put a big marine land or aquaclear filter on the back as it isnt drilled either. Your skimmer looks just like mine. How often do you find you have to empty your skim cup?

This post might be a little out of date but here we go.
40b soft corals, 2 clowns, 1 hawk fish, 1 damsel, 1 coral beauty, 1 purple dottyback.
I am using a penguin 350 bio wheel, and aquamaxx 1.5 skimmer
Jbj Orion Slim Line SL-140 Aquarium LED Lighting, Eheim Jager Heater 200W or 250W I don't remember, 1 hydor Hydor Koralia nano. I have 2 but took 1 out since the addition of the skimmer.
I use chemi pure blue, and aqua clear 70 sponges.
I do not do any dosing. I don't have test kits to check mg, iodine, strontium or cal.
I do 10 gal water changes once or twice a month depending on how I am feeling. I have hade some injuries and find it easier to do 5 gal water changes every week. I use rodi water from WWC along with WWC Pre mixed saltwater instant ocean salt.

Wondering if I put some live rock ruble in my canister filter instead of bio balls if that would be better. I would also run carbon and filter floss or filter pads. Anyone have any comments or suggestions on this idea?

  1. Picture of Tank
  2. It’s a IM 20 gallon Peninsula :)
  3. Mixed reef all the way!!! Group shot of all my fish, a pair of perculas and a cherub angel
  4. Filter floss and bioballs in a rack, nano skimmer
  5. Lighting: AI Prime on the left, AI Prime HD on the right, both with the flex arm
  6. Other equipment are ATO, one jebao powerhead, frag rack (does this really count?) and lots and lots of superglue
  7. I dose the seachem trio! Calcium, Alk, vitamins for the fish. Never tested perams, just dose 1 capful of each after a water change
  8. I do a water change whenever the detritus build up becomes too much for me to handle, about every 10ish days or so. Between 2 and 5 gallons just depending on how much detritus I’m sucking out.

She is a 50gal. Got softies/LPs & trying for some coralline. Also 2 tiny snowflake eels, a blue striped cleaner wrass, a gold head sandsifter goby, couple of nassarius & Coch snails, a red star & sandsifter star..... Yes the eels make a huge mess so all primarily cleaners & lots of sand (I have new sand castles built for me every day) wish I lived as good as these guys!
I only use a canister filtration (aqua one nautilus 1400) with 3 medias (floss, plastic ball thingies & some ceramic tube thingies) yes I'm no expert! Laugh as much as U want, I do all the time!!! :D
I have a mid-range blackbox light (nemo brand) a heater & 2 wave pumps. I crashed the tank a while back with us being winter, me being a noob & having a fireplace.... CRASH! so I have also invested in a fan & eventually chiller...
Been dosing purple up to try for coralline algae but no other dosing.
Water change 10 to 20 % weekly if I'm good, fortnightly more often!

I have made mistakes & it's only been running this year so I'm sure I'll make more but for me no sump & that skimmer......nope! To hard for me & this appears to be working pretty well.

Also, before anyone says anything : ) I'm posting this & she is getting a clean & water change right now!!! Not a shiny as I usually like

Tank Size : 15 gallons
Mixed Reef
Filtration : HOB that runs Chemipure with filter floss
Lighting: Black Box LEDS
Extra Equipment: Nothing special, just a heater, HOB, 2 hydor powerheads (240gph &180gph) and lights
Water Changes: 10% weekly

Tank is about 14 months old, went really slow with this set up to ensure stability, now that things have remained constant for a few months I'll be adding a yellow clown goby and some more corals over the next few weeks.
This is very nice and about the size I want to do for my first sw. You mention a HOB for filtration then under Extra Equipment you mention HOB again. Is that the same HOB or a second one? If it's a second one what are you using it for? A fuge?

What do you have your lights set at?
Unsure if this is normal for all lights but mine works on a percentage... I set the % for blue & white.
I TRY to make - 1hr of dawn
8 hrs day light
1 hr dusk
Few hrs moonlight

I've attached a pic of what settings I made up to mimick that.

I'm still playing a tad but it's along those lines

My last large tank was a 180 gallon, and I ran it with a Sump, Protein Skimmer, Chiller, UV Sterilizer, Heater, Metal Halides, and just about every other piece of equipment you can think of.
BUT... more and more, I'm seeing Reefers who are successfully running small and large reef aquariums "without a Sump", or some of the other traditional equipment that we who have been in the hobby for a while have always used.
SO... if you do not use a Sump in your reef aquarium, please share your tank with us - especially if you have a tank that is 40 gallons or above.
Please specify:
  1. Picture of Tank
  2. Tank Size
  3. Corals -or - Fish Only
  4. Filtration Method / Equipment
  5. Lighting type
  6. Any extra equipment you use
  7. Any chemical additives/dosing you use
  8. Water change frequency & how much
  1. Picture of Tank
    20201213_181054.jpg
  2. Tank Size 90g
  3. Corals & Fish softy , lps, sps
  4. Filtration Method / Equipment -fx4 reef octopus 1000hob, 2* 2100gph usa current eflux
  5. Lighting type- hydroplanet 4 bulb t5ho and 1 fluval marine (3rd gen)
  6. Any extra equipment you use - nope
  7. Any chemical additives/dosing you use. Aquaforrest (amino, energy, vitality build), fuel, phytoplankton, diy fish food reefroids
  8. Water change frequency & how much 10gal weekly

OMGNESS!! I'm so glad I found this thread!! I've been thinking I need a sump on the 65g I'm setting up, I even got a price quote on the plumbing yesterday cause that is something I'm not willing to attempt myself, $600 CDN!!
I was about to back out, what a saver this thread has been! Thank you all!
