No, it is all zoanthids, palys, and star polyps. They are not melting or closing up. They just are miniature versions of themselves.

Yeah if everything is acting up then it is an issue. Especially star polyps which are hardy than most other corals. Let us know how it goes after a little while.

Ya, nothing dies, in fact it still grows, albeit more slowly. The GSP is still living fine, it just has fringes that are half the normal size. I take it from my 210 and in about 2 weeks it starts shrinking. Same thing for palys, get some, put them in, and in two weeks they start showing signs of shrinkage (obvious Seinfeld reference intended :) )

My guess would either be running too much carbon or too much light. It looks like you have cut down on both, so please keep us updated.

I would also suggest that you may want to test both iodine and strontium levels in your system. While water changes should have replaced those two trace elements with your water change being conducted at two seperate times, with a much more limited volume of water, these could also still be the issue.

I will check the iodine/iodide level today. Don't have a strontium kit. Is low/high strontium known to cause this kind of behavior?

Yes, lack of either trace element can result in reduction in coral size/opening as well as growth. Had a buddy with similar issues who visited with a public aquarium. After learning that he had is system temp. controlled and what type of lights he had, they recommended checking these two trace elements as the next step. And of the two, they said the strontium was more likely.

Bringing this thread back from the dead. I'm experiencing the EXACT same situation, any updates?
I would have to rule out the Strontium theory. I get my water professionally tested and my Strontium levels were on point. My iodine level on the other hand was low. Acceptable range for iodine is .030-.090 mg/l, with natural seawater being at .060 mg/L. My actual iodine level was .020 mg/l, which is slightly low. But in my opinion, considering iodine is a minor trace element, I'm leaning more towards the lighting theory mentioned in above posts vs the low level of iodine.

Noob Here!!!! The Z's and P's in my tank started getting huge since i did the following changes
#1 from 20% water change a month to 10% every 2 weeks
#2 dosing ascorbic acid and vinegar
#3 Cut feeding from twice a day to once
I really dont know which one of these did it because i went through a minor chrash and started doing those at the same time to stop crash. Since then everything exploded.
Bandomo I love your tank and growth.

Terrence I’d go online and google that joshporksandwich guy. He’s the Jedi knight of Zoas. My colony of fruit loops I bought from Neptune Aquatics in San Jose was amazing at first but now edges look like deflated balloons and colors have faded. Funny thing is they won’t die... lol. They definitely don’t look like they did in the store. My Radioactive Green Zoas are doing amazing as well as my Darth Maul Zoas. Fruit loops seems to be no bueno for me. Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi Zack,

As per below. What are the main factors are causes them to shrink? Other zoas are doing quite well but it seems only certain strains have this issue after a while.

Temp 28 Celcius
PH 8.1
Salinity 1.025
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 10
Phosphate 0.1
Alkalinity 9
Calcium 420
