I recently purchased this Sicce UV with the goal of being able to have a Powder Blue Tang.
But is this actually only a clarifier and not a sterilizer?

Will it at least make it a bit safer to have this fish? Or it will not do ANYTHING to Ich, etc.

If anyone has experience with, please share.

Your help is very much appreciated.

Take it out now. Disassembled mine today and found the entire inside covered in a black tar substance.

Since you got it to help prevent ich, etc. on a tang, I take it that it's safe to say you're not using it on a nano...

Unfortunately, that being the case, a UV of 13 watts or less will be of very little help in mitigating parasites in a 120+ gallon tank.

Not really. UV sterilizers are handy tools to help control algae and parasites such as ich and are not intended as a cure or preventative for either just an aid to combat. Think of it like taking the Flu shot. It won’t prevent the Flu but helps weaken the symptoms and speeds up the recovery. Quarantining is your best bet when adding fish. A proper sized UV can be a great tool to add but it is crucial to size it properly to water flow and tank volume. There are some great posts on here discussing UV sizes and water flow if you care to look them up.

Wanted to wait a while and share my experiences with the 13w version. I’ve been running mine for almost 10 months now, on a 165 gallon system with 6 tangs, one being an Achilles that we’ve had almost a year, along with other fish. Never had any issues with the UV filter, pump or bulb. We feed our fish properly and quarantine them as well before adding. I bought this brand UV for redundancy with my filtration, not for means of controlling parasites. It works great at keeping the water clear and cutting down on algae on the tank glass. But I don’t believe this UV should be depended on for effective parasite management. There are UV’s out there that can tremendously help with parasites, but don’t solely depend on this one as a cheaper alternative in a large system. Study quarantine procedures and know your fish. Feed properly and pay attention to them. I don’t have the experience that a lot of you have. I’ve been in this hobby for 8 years and have lost thousands on everything related to reef tanks and fish over that time. I learned the hard way on a lot of things and don’t want anyone to do the things I did. Just my two cents of opinion here. Cheers to everyone!
