Second break down and clean out (and used some canned air) seemed to have fixed whatever the issue was. Since then it has gone through several power on/off cycles with me feeding and has been doing fine.

I would do some digging into how easy or difficult that unit is to clean/maintain.
Being easy to maintain is important at all skill levels, but it may be more important for a beginner.
Having said that, check out the Tunze 9410 that I keep bringing up as well. It is slightly oversized for your system (I use one on a 100 gallon reef, though) but it's super easy to maintain and high-quality. It has some fairly unique features too.

I have a sca-302 on my 50 gal cube, produces lots of good dark skimmate. Always needs a good blow to start.
If anything g I work I may be skimming too much.
Never used the reef octo, but I had a rwef octo dnw 150 recirculation in the past, and th sca 302 is way way way better at producing bubbles and skimmate.

It doesn't mean you shouldn't upgrade, but that AquaC you have should be able to dominate that tank (and larger) without a problem.
Assuming you have checked the aerator for clogs (do it now!) and clean the pump lately, it should not be having any problems. [emoji6]
If it's working perfectly and it's still not skimming enough, I believe you can upgrade to a mag seven which is how I ran the (slightly smaller) EV 90. If not mistaken you have EV 120 right?

Bought a vertex omega 180i skimmer- would someone please help me with the breaking in? I have heard several different heights to put it at for optimal performance but what is the best? I have heard to run it in vinegar to break it in; heard run it for 24 hours without the collection cup then run it wide open for a while. What is the best way to break it in?

Just plug it in and let it run is the best way to break it in. Should break in within 48 hours.
If you are using a protein skimmer with a Sicce pump make sure to open your pump and check your impeller every few months during cleanup. I just found out that the impellers on the sicce psk pumps (mine is a PSK1000) can crack after 1 or 2 years of use. Doesn't always happen, but it can. Google "sicce impeller cracked" and you will see several cases. I don't think that its a very common occurrence, given the large number of well-performing skimmers out there that use sicce pumps. Sicce themselves are aware of the issue, and their new impellers have a grey thermoplastic to prevent cracking. But most of the skimmers in the market still use the old impellers, and many sellers are still selling the old impellers as replacement parts. I was able to find the new impeller on Avast Marine (http://www.avastmarine.com/products/sicce-psk1000-pinwheel-impeller) . Here's what my cracked impeller looked like. Yikes!! I still think Sicce pumps are some of the best pumps out there and I'll continue using them. But checking your impeller regularly during cleanup may be good idea. BTW. Its not just Sicce. I found some other instances with other brand pumps that had the same issue.

Got a quick question about a skimmer. I recently purchased a nano aquarium second hand. It is an Aquatop BT21G. (http://aquatop.com/aquatop-biotope-stand-combo.html) It is a nice aquarium with everything in good shape, but it has a skimmer and I have never used one before so I am a tad bit lost.
The skimmer seems to be working, it bubbles up pretty well but the bubbles aren't making it out of the throat and into the collection cup. I have the skimmer pushed down in the chamber as far as it will go. Just wondering if perhaps there is something I am not doing right or if everything is ok and I'm just concerned over nothing. Thanks.

Purchased a new skimmer and was wondering what people's opinion is on running them in vinegar for a few hours before putting it in the tank. Some people say it helps them break in a little faster, others say this is just a myth.

My 2 top choices are the Vertex Alpha 250 or Nyos Quantum 300.
I know the Nyos is new and not a lot of info on it. I like the foot print of the Nyos over the vertex because I can put reactors in the sump with it but I heard nothing but good things about the vertex Alpha 250.

looking for a replacement pump for reef dynamics ins 100. The stock pump I think is a eco plus. I know Jeff was testing the SICCE pumps before he went out of business. I got on the new titan web site who took over reef dynamics which is offering a ehiem for 300.00 which is quiet expensive. My skimmer new was only 350.00. the other question I have it has the modified venturi hole in the base. can this be put on a aftermarket pump?

Skimz 203 - having problems dialing this one in just to break it in alone. This beast has a screw on the air intake and and turn knob to control a gate that allows water/bubbles to exit the skimmer. I remember once reading where @twilliard told someome w/ this same skimmer to open up the air intake screw all the way and to adjust the gate knob.
I have this skimmer in 8.5" of water. I keep turning it down b/c it's overflowing and I have the DC pump running at 50%.
I remember a thread where @Duke4Life was giving @Gwitness advice on his Skimz 201 (i believe)
Can any of you guys help me out, b/c I've never had anything so controllable and powerful before. Thanks!

First, I'm going to open it up full blast and let it flow over for 2 days. Break it in proper. I'll come back for more advice after that. Sorry, I wasn't using my sense.

Yup that screw is your air intake control. Back it out.
Also raise the skimmers body which should lower the body water height.
Open the effluent all the way
From there you can fine adjust it :)
