Do modern skimmers flood easier than the old models?

I am getting back into reefing after a 13 year pause. I think my tank 13 years ago had a skimmer on it that looked something like the Precision Marine Bullet series running on a Mag Drive pump. If the power went off of my pump, the large sump would fill up but the skimmer wouldn’t overflow.

I have a really nice AQUAMAXX CONES CO-2 IN-SUMP PROTEIN SKIMMER. I put it on a tank with only a couple of dry rocks in it and immediately it started pulling out some grunge. The tank is still in “test my plumbing” stage out in the garage soon to be drained and refilled inside the house.

So as I was playing with the system, I powered off the return pump, the sump filled and my protein skimmer flooded and the skimmer cup top gurgled spreading some droplets on the sides of the cabinet.

So I guess by design, these new skimmer s will flood if the sump water raises too high. I see folks do some magic with water sensors in their skimmer cups or water heights and main pump monitoring along with an Apex controller (have one in the box) to turn off the skimmer pump.

My question – what is different about the “classic” model PM Bullets compared to the newer models that made them seem to never flood due to sump water height? If I want a hands free no worry about flooding skimmer – should I go back to the old classic? Hey, the old classic did a terrific job but I think it might have been noisy!

Thoughts on Prime 200 INT? Premium is having a rather good sale on them.

It would go on a 220.

Thank you.

I just converted from a contemporary skimmer to a tried and true venturi like I had 18 years ago from LifeReef.com. I forgot how well those skimmers performed and how easy they are to maintain. Jeff is a terrific person to work with if you have any questions or need recommendations. I have a SVS3-24 driven by a Sicce Silent Synca 5 on my 160ish gallon system. Jeff's design makes the skimmer very quiet. The only issue I have is vibration noise from the pump connected with vinyl tubing to the skimmer. I am going to replace that short piece of tubing with a silicone tube from BRS.

Here is a pic of it. It has Reef Octopus Coral Vue on the collection cup lid. its the 150 int. I watched a youtube video on it and the person there said not to let the return pipe get below the water line.

I have the same reef octopus as the 1 above. The only difference I can see is that mine has a gate valve on the return pipe. I have been running it for about 3 months now and have really liked the skimmer. My question is: I am running the water level in the sump about 3 inches below the water level mini line. By closing the gate valve some it seems to be working fine. My phosphates have stayed around .03 and nitrates below 5. Does anyone know if there are any negative consequences for running the skimmer below the mini line?
