I just ordered a self cleaning head for the sro5000 external this should help it be a little more efficient. I was wondering if anyone has ever used a needle wheel pump to feed it so you can get a little more out of the skimmer?

Nothingreally happend. My lfs actually has been reallygreat as of late. I have spent so much time and money on skimmers and posting ect over the years. RC can just be frustration. But I was still answering the peoples questions there as well as here on r2r. so after working an 11 hour day I would spend another 1to 3 hours on the boards. Trying to help where I could. THe hobby has lost the luster with all that it had entailed for me. so it was time for me to shift my efforts elswhere. I can say that I enjoy the people here and everyone has always been great.
I dont think it does anyone any good for me to go into the dirt on everything. Lets just keep it positive.
The seaside aquatics skimmers are really good for the money. If you really want the next step up I would get he jns sk2. ITs just super nice. really easy to adjust. you can really fine tune it. Yes the aquamaxx cone 2 is the same skimmer.
I would check Socaltropicalfishoutlet for your jns and ssa skimmers. Premium carries some now too I believe.
Ill just be in lurk mode for a while.

What can you tell me about the SWC cone skimmer? I have been thinking about the 180. But I am concerned about the press regarding the owner of the company. I am also looking at a comparable Bubble Magus.

I thought the jns sk2 would be too big for my tank, it says that it is rated for up to 375 gallons. The cs2 is rated for 230 gallons. I would definitely like to get the jns sk2:wink: if it would still skim correctly with my smaller tank. Would it be the best option for my tank over the cs2? (75 gallon w/ 30 gallon sump)

I would pass on the swc 180 the pump is the weak point. No sense buying that when there is better for similar money. The jns sk2 is a far better skimmer, the seasside has a better pump and is better.
that JNS SK2 seems interesting. Seems like an awfully small amount of air to take in for a skimmer rated for 375gal though. I'm far from an expert though.

Currently I have a older SWC Mini S cone with a red dragon pinwheel and honestly haven't been impressed and would like to change out to a different skimmer. what do you think? I've looked at things as inexpensive as a Bubble magus NAC77 to as expensive as a Vertex alpha 200 cone, very open to suggestions though.

I just got a reef octopus 350sx. The water line is just above the minimum level line imprinted on the skimmer. I cant run all three pumps without water overflowing into the collection cup, adjusting the valve and it still overflows. Any thoughts.

Looking for an opinion on the needlewheel Reef Octopus skimmers. How do they compare to the recirculating version. Doesn't appear that I can get the recirculating skimmer in my sump and they appear to require the feed pump be ordered as a seperate item. Anyone have oppinions on this one?

the octo nw series hasnt really changed too much over the years. They may look different but the pumps are pretty much the same. I would save a little more money and get something from the sro line or a jns skimmer.
I prefer in sumps over recircs. But that is me. if you need to run external then you have no choice really. But IMO I would just get a insump skimmer and save the money.

I got a JNS Sk2 for my 75 gal and agree it is very nice. Love the smooth water level adjustment.
I have 9 fish. 1 tang, 5 anthias, 2 clowns, & 1 tailspot Blenny. 90% sps (most are frags right now). I feed 2 to 3 times a day. I wonder if the skimmer isn't too much for my bioload.

Mojo what's up bud? How's life without a tank?
Have a 120g with 2 clowns, a few hermit crabs & 2 shrimp, live rock. Moving toward reef andfeast to add more fish & coral as we move forward. Just bought a refugium sump, not set up yet, as we need your help in purchasing the right protein skimmer for in sump, or along side, depending. Noise not really a issue as tank front can be seen from family room, but all equipment is in adjacent room. Looking to spend no more than $400. Also have R.O. System as we are on a well and Ultraviolet sterilizer. Realize I might have to return the sump if the suggested protein sk will not fit, kinda put the cart before the horse, ugh! Any help appreciated!
Thanks for the advice, the sk2 is on order and coming next week. Our refugium is a Eshopps, could anyone make suggestions for the refugium compartment? Sand, mud, gravel, bio balls? It would be great if you could point us in the right direction, we need a light to! We get a little bit closer to being ready to add to our tank, next up is tank lighting and then we should be good...thanks again for the help!
