Hello
My son (7) found some snails on the rocks and we would like to id them and be sure they are reef safe before they go in the tank

I wonder if 2 are trochus and 4 turbo.

Preempting some questions - this is a place where people fish so no problem with catching a couple snails

Thanks for your help

I would go through them on here and identify them yourself since it will be much easier for you with them on hand physically.

None will be an exact 1:1 match to what we have in the hobby.

These are snails found in East Queensland. (Assuming that is where you are from)

Chances are, if they are that big, and shaped that way, they are probably harmless algae eaters, but 1 might be a whelk. (Probably not, but can’t confirm with dark shell)

The only way they will be harmful is if they eat other snails

But overall, 2 and 4 are likely from the family Trochidae (trochus snails) and 3 Neritidae (Nerite snails)

I will warn you, if you found them on the rocks on the shores, there is a very high chance these will climb out of your aquarium

Thanks. That’s awesome will spend the evening with the kid identifying them

Yes. Exactly this striped one is everywhere on the rocks here around Brisbane
Yea that trochus might end up on your floors then :face-with-tears-of-joy:

Snails collected on rocks at beaches will do a good enough job but end up dying when they dry up waiting for the tide to come in
