Snails from long island sound?

I collected a bunch of nassarius snails from LIS where they are an invasive species. I have several hundred, and would like to know if they are safe to add to an active reef?

I'm not sure, but they probably wouldn't do so well seeing as they are accustomed to cold water temperatures. If you do attempt it, make sure you do a slow acclimation.

These snails can take anything, Im not really too worried about that. I think that I will put them in a five gallon bucket for a few weeks prior to using them.

Let us know how you make out. I've seen plenty of posts on my local forum asking about grabbing them from the sound and trying them in their tanks, but never hear anything after they actually put them in their tanks...

Ive got a bc 14 ill try some in. My biggest concern is algae attached to their shells, but they expell sound water and exchange it with tank water upon entering a new environment, so like I said I will put them in a bucket first.

These may be "mud-snails" which are not Nassarius, they are predatory and can sting humans. Here is the scientific name "Ilyanassa obsoleta". Do a search on this name. I would not put them in your tank!!!

I picked up about 2000 of them by the handfull with no stings, but I will look into it. They match the snails in my tank perfectly, right down to the shell pattern.

They look like nassarius vibex, they have a pointy shell unlike the rounded worn one of the mud snail.

I did it. For a few weeks they were popping up out the sand. Now come to think of it haven’t seen them at lights out or feeding. Had a dino outbreak so I assume they died..
