Hi, so i got my snowflake eel one week ago and today is passed away, and it got my wondering what was up because it never really acted normal and it was always swimming all over the tank which I thought he was just super hungry so if fed him but he just kept swimming and I didn't want to over feed so I stopped, but he never really stayed in the rocks since I got him and he ate but like I said never stopped swimming around, (also I have plenty of live rock and hiding places)

What are the water parameters? Thats strange. You only had it for a week?

That’s @Jay Hemdal question

Sorry, not enough background info to go on here. It does sound like the eel had issues from day 1. That implies that it either came to the tank with some underlying problem, or that the tank itself had some issues with water quality.

Tiny snowflake eels are handled pretty poorly through the supply chain. I suspect they are all caught with drugs, and many arrive very skinny.

You'll have to elaborate on your numbers. 1800 magnesium, 115 Alk? and 1700? ammonia is not good.

Something is up with the testing your store is doing, I don't believe your numbers are accurate 🙃

If your Alk is 115 ppm (and I'm only assuming it's in ppm), that's a dKH (<much more commonly used Alk unit) of about 6.4, which is low for Alk. Your magnesium at 1700 is very high. I don't really think you can have an Alk so low with a Mag so high if you're using a typical salt mix. Did they tell you what your calcium is?

I would suggest getting your own water tests so you know for sure. I would suggest the Salifert brand as they are accurate, easy to use/read (mostly!) and not very expensive.

6.4 dkh is low for the snowflake too, and yeah, that's wildly out of whack with the mag numbers.

What test kits, and can you get a second opinion, maybe have teh LFS test your water?

They use aqua spin tests

I have my own test kit but its just API and its not very accurate
API is fine, it doesn't get a lot of love here on R2R, but they are fine.

That's very low for calcium, and again, I think this is testing error. You can't have very low Alk and Calc, but sky high Mag. I believe they are doing something wrong. I would go to another shop, or try the Salifert test kits, which are no more expensive that the API, but arguably better.

What salt mix are you using?

I buy saltwater straight from my store
