Would a snowflake eel and a marine betta work together in a 65g, or is it too small a space? I'm thinking I'd add lots of pipes through the substrate against the glass so the eel feels secure but I can still observe it. Would I be able to fit anything else in there with them? My current tank has an adult clownfish and a Valentini Puffer that I'd love to have alongside the betta and eel so there's some activity and personality when the other two are being reclusive, but I want to make sure that wouldn't make the betta hide more.

You should be fine with those two, marine bettas really only swim (rather float) at night they usually hide all day. Eel would be fine. I think you adding your clowns and valintini puffer would be fine with those but I think you should cap there since you have 3 high bioload fish and only 65 gallons.

@Luananeko

I agree with littlefoxx on this one. You would be fine having a snowflake regarding temperment but keep in mind as littlefoxx suggested you are going to have a high bio load on it. I have a 120gallon system with a snowflake, a few tangs, damsels, clownfish and the eel itself is fine however I have to use PNS bacteria that I grow and sell to keep the nutrients down. I personally feed the snowflake daily with 1 large shirmp per day. So thats a lot of waste I have roughly 150lbs of rock in my system too. So i could only imagine how quick it could affect your paramets being in a smaller system. If you find yourself needing nutrient contol reach out to me.
Mine is roughly 15" long and around 3/4inch thick and still growing. 😂🤣😂

Also I used no pipes it prefers to hang out in the rocks.

Thank You.

Excellent, thank you!! What size pipes would an adult Snowflake eel need? 2" or do I need bigger?

I honestly never considered using pipes. My system is a reef tank with a mixed reef. Mine personally prefers the rocks it loves swimming though them and it sleeps in different locations every night. If you did consider this make sure the rocks are stable and sitting on the bottom glass payne as the sand could cause shifting and a rock slide if not adhered.

Yep, I've dealt with enough diggers that my rocks are always sitting on top of egg crate on the bottom glass with the substrate then filled in around it. I'm using 3D printed under substrate tunnels in one of my freshwater tanks that all the fish there just LOVE and has really allowed me to better enjoy the more reclusive bottom dwellers, so I'm really curious to see if an eel would take to them the same way.

Dont use pipes for morays, they wont use them! My 4 morays ignored pipes in favor of caves, overhangs and rocks they can dig under

I tried a big pipe for my zebra but she prefers the tiny cave she found and likes to coil in. Ill get a picture of her when Im home. My other eels will also squeeze in there with her 😂

Here are some places my eels love. I do have a picture of Nebby (my zebra) curled in her favorite cave

Omg, that's hilarious. They're like cats stuffing themselves into boxes. I love it! I'm glad you guys warned me about that BEFORE I tore apart the tank to build the pipes into the substrate :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing:

Oh yeah they probably wouldnt use it. They like to coil up not stretch out all the time. Mine like to stick straight out or coil up depending on their mood.

So would doing a 3D printed cave hide against the glass like in the bottom left of my Glofish tank be a waste of time then? I suppose it's easier in freshwater tanks since I don't have to keep scraping coraline off. For obvious reasons I wouldn't really want to build a rock cave against the glass.
