Snowflake eel problem

I have a snowflake eel that was 6 inches when I got him 2 years ago and is about 15-18 inches now. He has always eaten like a pig almost daily. He has always been picky with what he would eat. For the first 7-9 months he would only eat krill and maybe the occasional clam. I got him eating silversides for almost a year and he went to only eating every 2 or three days. About 5 months ago I got some frozen squid from a local fish market. He went nuts for it and has wanted it everyday. Well about 3 weeks ago he stopped eating and has stopped coming out. I have gotten him to take a few pieces here and there but not more than 1 or 2 pieces. It seems like he is afraid to come out like someone has whooped his but and he just stays in the rocks. I do have a purple tang that seems to get in his face if he comes out from the rocks. I have tried that same squid, shrimp, silversides, krill, frozen San Fran squid and he won't take anything. I am going to try some clams tomorrow.

Any suggestions?

Over the two years he has taken 2 clowns and a goby usually after he would stop eating for a week no matter what I put in front of him. I have expected to see him take a vandy chromis or clown over the past few weeks but nope. Oh and my QT is down right now because the filter failed and I am in the process of making a sump. Guess I am going to finish that this week so I can get it up and running this weekend.

Mine is a little bigger, and also eats like a champ most of the time. After eating maybe 3 silversides over 3 weeks she is presently eating 3 a day, clams too. Tonight she almost came out of the water because I couldn’t get the tongs out fast enough.

Maybe they just cycle. It seems every time I start to worry she starts eating again.
